Emory not taking new pts?
I am just seeing that Emory in Atlanta is not taking new patients. I see Dr. Rye once a year. I know Dr. Rye has been researching overseas and was cutting his clinic hours as a result. Does anyone have info about this? I am not in Georgia. He prescribes in my state and I'm worried about what's next.

Re: Question regarding buprenorphine
I take buprenorphine and tramadol. buprenorphine has been a God-send....but be aware that it has a reverse effect on the pain receptor blocking of opiods. While tramadol does seem to complement the buprenorphine for rls for me, the pain reducing effect is removed. I had knee surgery and didn't reali...

muscle relaxers
I recently had a double knee replacement. I have since developed a weird spasm in my thigh. When I go back to my Ortho I am expecting him to prescribe a muscle relaxer for the spasm. Are there any recommendations for one that will not exacerbate restless leg?

Double Knee Replacement
I'm a member of the RLS Foundation, but I can't find any recommendations to give the anesthesiologist for a double knee replacement I'm having tomorrow. Are there certain meds I should tell him to avoid? I know they're doing a nerve block and general anesthesia, I believe. Any advice is appreciated!...

Re: Need advice
Your ferritin indicates your BLOOD iron is fine, however that is not the same as BRAIN iron. RLS is caused by BID (Brain Iron Deficiency). Many people with RLS can have their symptoms markedly reduced or even eliminated with IV Iron treatments. This is the only treatment that gets at the basis for ...

This is an excellent book that you may find very informative, it is easy to read and can be used for discussion purposes with your doctor. Clinical Management of Restless Legs Syndrome by Lee, Buchfuhrer, Allen and Hening. Make sure to get the second edition. These Authors are at the top of the lea...

Re: Need advice
Augmentation is indeed caused by dopaminergic substances - pramipexole, ropinerole, etc. It almost always goes away once you stop the meds. BUT, if you've been augmented a long time (some of us had doctors who didn't understand it and we kept increasing doses for years), you can have progression at...

Re: Need advice
badnights, That's a wealth of information. Augmentation confuses me. I get that RLS worsens with time/age, but augmentation is specific worsening due to medicine (Mirapex); but, it will get better once you're off the med? Whereas breakthrough RLS due to the meds not working will not get better unles...

Re: Need advice
Early this year my doctor told me to stop taking the small dose of Mirapex (0.25mg) that I had been on for about five years. After about a week or so, I found that I needed to increase my methadone dose from 5 to 7.5mg/day to cover my RLS. But after a few more weeks, I found that 7.5mg of methadone...

Re: Need advice
It might be helpful to try and increase your ferritin. It could do with being higher. Also have you ever tried reducing your mirapex. With movement in your shoulders and arms it does sound like DA (mirapex) augmentation. How can you be sure that augmentation of Mirapex is not the issue? It is very ...

Re: Need advice
Your combined meds are not that different than mine. Your use of buprenorphine is where I am hoping to go in about six months (I have to rotate opioids due to side effects from each). So I don't really have any suggestions beyond that you can try tweaking some of the doses to see what might help. A...

Re: Need advice
James, Are you taking the dipyridamole for RLS? If so, was it suggested by your doc or some other way? It was effective in a very small demonstration trial but would be considered experimental by most docs. Does it help? Your ferritin indicates your BLOOD iron is fine, however that is not the same ...

Re: Need advice
Hi James7 - I am not thinking correctly (meds working and I was up early today). What I'd like to know if what meds you started on, how long did you take it at that dose, then what/how much you added, and when. Also - what symptoms dp you have taking this combination? Do you still have an urge to m...
