Re: %Saturation running high after supplemental iron. problem? Solution?

Holland- So I shouldn’t worry about the 55% saturation? Both you and Steve seem to focus more on the ferritin than the sat%. Bill

%Saturation running high after supplemental iron. problem? Solution?

In 2019, I had my ferritin level checked, and it was 64. So I started taking supplement iron. First it was the standard 65 tab, twice a day with C. After some reading, last year I changed to taking both pills at the same time, once a day with C, with no food two hours before and one hour after. (Alt...

Re: Ok to remove pramipexole cold turkey if starting pregabalin

Holland-

As I wrote the last response, it made me think- pregabalin versus gabapentin? Same category, same results? Or is there a difference?

Thanks,

Bill

Re: Ok to remove pramipexole cold turkey if starting pregabalin

Holland- Thanks for the input. Makes me feel more confident. As for a backup, Before I took pramipexole, I took gabapentin for about a month, leveled out at 1200 dosage and was effective, so I am expecting that pregabalin will be similar effective. Side effects of gabapentin (I experienced some ting...

Ok to remove pramipexole cold turkey if starting pregabalin

Not to long ago I posted about pramipexole versus pregabalin/Lyrica. Got plenty of great replies, thanks. I see my doctor (a GP with limited RLS experience- no specialists in my area) in two weeks and I plan to make the change. I will start at 50mg, which also makes increasing by 50 easily done unti...

Re: Pramipexole versus Lyrica/pregabalin? Or gabapentin?

Thanks. I have reached out to my prescription provider to get cost information on the generic. If “reasonable” I’ll talk to my doctor on switching.

Thanks!

Re: Pramipexole versus Lyrica/pregabalin? Or gabapentin?

Thanks. Do you know the typical dosages? Or starting dosage? The nice thing about pramipexole is the tablet form, so one can cut and take half tabs while fine tuning the dose at the beginning. But it looks like pregabalin is capsules, correct? Also, is pregabalin significantly more expensive? Gabape...

Pramipexole versus Lyrica/pregabalin? Or gabapentin?

First - a bit of background. Have been using pramipexole for several years now, started at 0.25, now up to 0.375. No longer 100% effective - I have some tough evenings. And sleepiness side effect is constantly with me. Had tried ropinirole as well as gabapentin for a while. Both worked okay, but set...

Re: Oral Iron instead of meds?

Thanks. Stjohnh- I had read the article that you linked to. (What surprises me is how little data there really is). Based upon your opening sentence, reduction of meds because of iron success is a goal. Although disappointing that the success rate of iron is not very high. This seems counterintuitiv...

Oral Iron instead of meds?

I have been reading a lot about iron including some technical journal articles, and have attended a webinar. This has me thinking, but a bit of background before my question. My background is that I have been tried numerous of the medications, most success in relieving symptoms with ropinirole or pr...

Re: Ferritin increased with oral iron, now what?

QyX- I like your “just be happy with the way things are”. I tend to overthink things, the engineer in me. So I will probably just keep taking the 2x65 until things get noticeably better/worse. No reason to rock the boat. Thanks.

Re: High (?) % saturation and hemochromatosis

Holland- have only had one test that measured %saturation. The printout says “% saturation” and nothing more. It is listed beneath the “iron binding capacity” (358), and is not next to the ferritin number, so I suspect it is not the “transferrin saturation” that we are looking at. I suspect I am loo...

High (?) % saturation and hemochromatosis

Started on oral iron (2x65 plus C on empty stomach) six months ago, which increased my ferritin from 64 to 191. They also measured % saturation at 49. Reading in the foundation medical bulletin “supplemental iron should not be continued if %sat is >45 given the risks of hemochromatosis”. Should I be...

Ferritin increased with oral iron, now what?

Last June, my ferritin was measured at 64, so I started taking oral iron, 2x65 plus C, on empty stomach, in August. Six months later, ferritin is at 191. (Fasting, no oral iron for >48 hrs before test) This sounds like a good improvement, getting me well above the “low zone”. So, now what? I don’t k...
