I have been taking melatonin for over a year and clonazepam for about 9 months and although I would fall asleep easily (apart from when the RLS reared it's ugly head) I never got that real tired feeling like I had to go to bed and I never slept for more that 5 hours - EVER. But combined with carbama...

Thanks for the support. I want to try and come off it because I'm hoping that now I'm not drinking that I don't need it. If the RLS comes straight back I will just resume taking it. Not a lot is known about how carbamazepine works so I'd prefer to not be taking it if I don't need to. Also most drugs...

Update on carbamazapine

Well I have been taking carbamazapine for over a month now and it has worked really well. The side effects didn't last long and the only time RLS comes back now is if I drink heavily for 2 or more days in a row, then it is torture, but with no alcohol I am now sleeping solidly for at least 9 hours a...

I wonder how long the side effects last, I didnt notice any nausea in the first week but now I feel sick constantly. Also have the other side effects but they are expected with anything that helps you sleep right. I can't even stomach alcohol right now, the thought of it makes me sick or I would sti...

Thanks, it sure wasn't easy but champix was a lifesaver for me, I doubt I would have ever quit without it.

I stopped my SSNRI and I've kept taking my other meds, particularly carbamazapine which seems to take away my symptoms most of the time but a few days ago I got this during the day and I usually only get it at night. My spasms are more in the torso area and are difficult to disguise with other body ...

Thank you VA, I think I will leave the antidepressants for the time being, I'm really not willing to risk it. Also I read the book the craving brain, it was very interesting but became a little too focussed on AA and 12 step type programs which don't work for me personally. But since I first posted ...

Thanks for the link, I'm hoping now that I have stopped drinking that will be enough to stop the RLS.... but who knows, I do know having a drink is not worth this misery. I have only been drinking since Dec and I have given up once in that time for about 6 weeks. But of course within a week I was dr...

Thanks for your reply Aiken, interesting to learn that alcohol is bad for RLS. I wonder if I can still drink "on occasion" does that affect RLS? Is drinking casually even something I am capable of anyway..... I don't know. I haven't had a drink today and the meds I am on are helping with t...

Anticonvulsants Double-blind studies have shown that carbamazepine (Tegretol), at a dose of 200 to 400 mg daily, is effective in reducing sensory manifestations of restless legs syndrome (1-3,16), especially among young patients with recent onset of disease and severe symptoms. Unfortunately, subse...

bupropion had no effect, my RLS went away seemingly by itself and just came back 3 days ago, 3 days of torture. I'm now using carbamazepine, clonazepam, propanolol and melatonin, and all RLS symptoms seem to have disappeared. I would really like to know what made it come back though, could stress ha...

I was not suffering from RLS while taking champix, but it did not bring it on so my guess is it is safe from that respect. The side effects are awful though (especially if you are a drinker) but overall it was so worth it, I have been smoke free for 2 months and haven't used champix in 7 weeks.

SRED & RLS

Before SWIM's RLS got really bad, and before it was diagnosed, She suffered from SRED (Sleep related eating disorder) where she would eat during the night, sometimes she did it in her sleep and had no memory of it in the morning other than the empty packets of biscuits around her bed. Other times sh...

Bupropion

In studies bupropion (Wellbutrin, zyban) has shown to be effective at reducing cravings to not only cigarettes but also to methamphetamine and food. It is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor. How is the result so different to dopamine agonists though? SWIM will be starting on bupropion soon, see this thre...
