Sara, I am working on several ideas about RLS. Here's one of them: Basically anything leading to decreased oxygen delivery to your tissues causes RLS: 1. old age - decreased circulation 2. sitting - " 3. low blood pressure - " 4. pregnancy - " 5. low hemoglobin 6. salty foods or alcohol - act as diu...

I cannot drink alcohol of any kind or my RLS goes bullistic!
It is sad because I would love a glass of wine or beer once in awhile!

Nicola, This is very interesting! My brother has celiac disease and my mother has wheat allergy (elevated IgE antibodies to wheat ). If I eat stone-ground wheat my face breaks out in itchy patches.... But I do not avoid gluten. It might be worth a try. Why would gluten be a problem? It is possible t...

Scorpio,
Yes, I think cold weather makes my RLS worse. Piling extra blankets on my feet at night helps.
Again, it is back to my poor circulation theory: when you are cold, blood vessels constrict, reducing blood flow. Reduced blood flow means more RLS.

Barb, I think your decrease at camp is due to increased exercise.... I know that if I run on my treadmill every day - after 2 weeks my RLS completely DISAPPEARS! Of course I haven't had the time or inclination to do that in years! But I do enjoy walking on the treadmill and I can prop a book up to r...

Back to low blood pressure

Back to low blood pressure. This definitely makes my RLS worse. I know from when I was pregnant & getting weekly readings. The lower it got, the worse the RLS became. This ties in with sleeping. What happens when you go to sleep? Your heart rate slows and your blood pressure drops. Lower blood p...

Good luck with everything Doug. Sinemet has been on the market for at least 10 yrs. It is a drug for Parkinsons disease, but is found to help RLS. It is a dopamine precursor - dopamine is an important neurotransmitter. One word of advice: look up the side effects of this drug, and if you believe you...

Pregnancy tips?

Deborah, My RLS started with my first pregnancy - I can relate. My doctor had me take Calcium and it helped. Have been using it ever since (20 years now). My suggestion: don't drink any pop! makes it worse! Then, take calcium 1800-2400 mg per night should do the trick. Also, ask your doctor what a s...

Natural remedy that works for me

RLS in the family

What I see by reading posts here is that everyone had RLS early in life, definitely by early 20's. And everyone is trying to relate it to something that happened in their life at that time. For each person, it is a different thing. I am beginning to believe it is genetic. I am working on an idea. I ...

What caused your RLS?

Two comments: 1. I think my RLS came from drinking 3 cokes a day in my early 20's. I have read that phosphoric acid in pop competes with, and may even block out (permanently?) calcium. Calcium is very important in muscle movement AND transmission of neural impulses. Anyone else, a pop junkee? 2. Als...
