Re: My one year anniversary on a low oxalate/salicylate eating plan.

Congratulations, Deb! I'm so happy for you. If you can find organic asparagus I think you may be OK with it. I have learned that "non-organic" asparagus and artichokes are typically sprayed with an oxalic acid solution post harvest to "preserve freshness and nutrients" while in storage and transport...

Re: My journey to 100% relief

Frunobulax, I have some thoughts to share and a funny story, but first I want to report that in the days since I started this thread my complete relief from RLS has continued unabated except for three successive days when I ate some “organic” asparagus. On those 3 days, starting the day after I firs...

My journey to 100% relief

Many RLS sufferers who adopt a low oxalate diet report a 90 to 95% improvement. Over the past six years I had achieved almost complete relief, but I continued to have some low grade leg discomforts that manifested as difficulty in sitting at my desk all day. The discomfort interfered with my ability...

Low Oxalate Diet, a possible explanation for its effectiveness

I have gotten almost complete relief from RLS by following a low oxalate diet. I have been reading some of the scientific studies and trying to come up with a possible explanation for what is happening in my body when I experience an episode of RLS. However, before I share my ideas I want to make cl...

Re: Another year of relief (Low-oxalate diet)

Deb, It is wonderful to hear your report. Watch out for non-organic asparagus. I wondered for a long time why it triggers my RLS even though it is reputed to be a low oxalate food. I recently discovered that it is typically sprayed with an oxalic acid solution post harvest to “preserve nutrients” an...

Re: Another year of relief

And, Frunobulax I apologize for not addressing your direct question. I have recently been receiving private messages from a 20 year sufferer who has preferred not to discuss his issues publicly. He went "all in" on the low oxalate diet and got relief within 8 days. This is consistent with my experie...

Re: Another year of relief

I would consider avoiding the collagen. As I get deeper into my investigation I realize glycine, gelatin and collagen probably all generate oxalate in the body. I have reviewed my diary and found numerous examples of unexplained leg discomfort on the days after I had beef stew. I haven't gotten the ...

Re: Another year of relief

Thanks for the bump, Frunobulax. As it happens I was using the Thanksgiving weekend to compose my annual report of progress. I have noted there is much discussion on this board concerning ferritin levels. Let me share a story. I have been in awe of our 41 year old daughter’s energy and vitality for ...

Re: Another year of relief

Update for 2018: I continue to enjoy almost complete freedom from RLS. I don’t consider myself cured because a high oxalate meal can bring it back within 24 hours. When it does recur I know that reverting to my low oxalate regimen will bring relief by the next day. A few random tips and thoughts: Co...

Re: Another year of relief

After another year of success on a Low Oxalate Diet, I have realized that the LOD can lead to magnesium deficiency because many of the foods I avoid are the better sources of magnesium. I am now taking magnesium malate pills with 180 mg of magnesium three times a day: after arising and a half hour b...

Re: Another year of relief

Tommy, it is great to hear from you. I’m delighted that you are doing well. Since I stopped drinking iced tea with lunch I have been almost completely symptom free. However I did have a bad experience with collard greens, which I was eating in an effort to add variety with a very healthful vegetable...

Re: Another year of relief

I’m relying on the “Trying Low Oxalates” Yahoo group Excel spreadsheet which seems to be the best compilation of the most current info. But be warned, the spreadsheet is no fun. It is huge and, for me, somewhat confusing. I took a legal pad and pen and started making notes of the things that were mo...

Tommy, This is wonderful news. I couldn’t be happier for you and for the people who may benefit from your experience. Whatever happens in the upcoming days and weeks, please hang in. I have every confidence you are on the right path, even if it gets worse for a while. It is entirely possible that yo...

Re: Another year of relief

One approach would be cut back on oxalate rich foods except for pizza and see how that goes. This could be consistent with Susan Owen's recommendation to make these dietary changes slowly. On the other hand, if you haven’t been eating a lot of other oxalate rich foods, then the pizza could be your m...

Re: Another year of relief

Thanks for the update. It sounds like you are doing about as well as can be expected.

BTW, if you are taking Co-Q10 as a supplement you might want to lay off it for a while. I was surprised to read on some website recently that it can interfere with sleep.

Best of luck going forward.
