Hi! I have had rls for several years now. I have found what works great for me is to massage my buttocks deep down at the hip joint and higher. I use the "homedics" hand held massager that really pounds the muscles. I use it right before I go to sleep....it has been the only thing that I feel I can count on to quiet those legs! It doesn't do anything for me if I use it on my legs only on the buttocks. Here's a link to the site of the massager: http://homedics.com/prod/detail.aspx?ID=208. It's been a God-send to me!

Terilee,

I too find that massage helps to some degree. In this quest I began having weekly massages one maybe two years ago. It is not something that has decreased the indicence of flare ups, but it helps with muscle fatigue and KNOTS. Do others experience a number of knots in their muscles. Initially my therapist said after a few sessions I would only have to come in occasionally, but we have found that the knots never leave permanently. She finally suggested I try to find out why I have them.

So had a spinal xray and nothing showed up there. The doctor just said it must be related to muscle spasms.

I primarily use the massager on my legs, we do have one that fits in a chair, and does upper lower back regions. I too find a deep massage of the buttocks relaxes my legs, never thought of using the hand held device for that, but may try!

If husband would be around maybe I can get him to knead the ole buttox!

When I am having a bad attack of RLS, my boyfriend will often give me a deep massage--more times than not, it helps tremendously, and the RLS symptoms will subside enough for me to go to sleep.

In Europe I haven't found a good massager, so I developed my personal massager that works very well in horizontal position with music syncronisation.

All muscles get relaxed and oxygenated.
Main advantage of this massager is that the massage happens in a relaxant position! I do nothing and with meditation music I fall as sleep.

I use it right before I go to sleep, when i'm waking up in the night and in the morning. It is better as drugs! Here's a link to the site of the massager:

actually the massager is not to sale, but i'm looking for manufacturers.
What are your impressions of this massager?
Thanks.

I noticed the last time I got a massage that I actually slept through the night. Something I haven't done in years. I have found that by massaging in some analgesic cream (non scented preferred) about 30 minutes before I go to bed that I can actually sleep for about 5 hours without waking up. Last night I went until 3 am (yahoo) before waking up. :P

I've been going to a professional massage therapist every fortnight (or weekly if i'm going through a bad spot) for over 2 years now. She also specialises in craniosacral therapy.

Both the massage and the cranio help "undo" the knots in the legs and particularly in the top of the thigh & hip area which aren't used to getting such a workout during a really bad attack.

The only thing she uses is a basic non-fragranced massage oil and a liniment if needed.

I definitely find that i'm able to sleep a lot better after a good "session" and am guilty of actually falling asleep on the table too

Dear Nadia,

My massage therapist has mentioned craniosacral therapy. She had some instruction, but is not certified to perform craniosacral therapy. Someday I would like to have a cranio session.

Like you every two weeks is okay when RLS is not severe, during the summer when my rls tends to be worse I go weekly. If I ever win the lottory I would go daily! *Big Grin* It has been my experience if I go longer than two weeks my daily rls worsens.

Sometimes when I am kept awake by RLS, I massage my own feet. I use my thumbs and push fairly hard along the top and bottom of my feet. This definitely makes the twitching go away for a little while...although sometimes not long enough to fall asleep.

yes i have the knots

yes i do have the knots too and they are very hard to massage out but bless my hubby....he tries. If it wasnt for his massages i would probably just get my legs chopped off and that is no lie. I wake up with bruises wher i have tried to piund them out if he is on the road. A Hot shower is my second best therapy. I get in then gradually make the water as hot as I can....Sex is the third option but only after Ive had the massage ! sex is used as reward for massage ( Just kidding)

bbdeezy,

Just kidding! Hahahaha

From time to time I will use emu oil to massage my feet and legs. It seems to help.

Dear Jan,

That is a common reaction to beginning massage therapy. It is strange that the person didn't mention this and help prepare you. When I first began, she told me that I would probably feel worse and I did. Short version, it is moving toxins etc through the body, and you should drink LOTS of water. In addition to RLS they have diagnosed me with Fibro. Fortunately for me my therapist is willing to work with my level of discomfort etc and adjust her methods.

Now I go weekly and have very few side affects. However, occasionally I still have a couple of bad days following a session.

In relationship to the RLS I believe that massage used at the onset of the RLS symptoms has provided some with temporary relief. It is much like the walking, and other tricks we use. It provides a temporary relief of active symptoms. Stop the action and the symptoms return. Massage Therapy has not reduced nor eliminated my RLS symptoms.

Adding the emu oil massage to my nightly routine is just my habit. I still rely on medication to help with the RLS.

You'll have to forgive me somedays I am a tad slow...

What I should have added, was for a one time massage treatment one would be better off having a relaxing form of theraputic massage like a swedish massage, maybe a heated stone massage instead of a deep tissue massage. A deep tissue massage may not be the best selection.

mine was a stone massage and it made the pain worse in my legs and they started jerking almost imediately when I walked out of the office. She did tell me that I may feel worse and I actually felt good everywhere else the only thing was it made me jerk so bad and start hurting in the legs so bad that I would never go again. I was up all night with my legs jerking. She also said it may help or it may make things worse so I guess I am one of the lucky ones where it gets worse :(
