"The Miracle Cure" - Book Review - A Must Read

Please share your experiences, successes, and failures in using non-drug therapies for RLS/WED (methods of relief that don't involve swallowing or injecting anything), including compression, heat, light, stretches, acupuncture, etc. Also under this heading, medical interventions that don't involve the administration of a medicine to the body (eg. varicose-vein operations, deep-brain stimulation). "The Miracle Cure" - Book Review - A Must Read

Post by sardsy75 »

I decided to put this together after seeing yet another person post a somewhat "hopeful" plea to this site, hoping that they would receive a resounding "yes, there is a cure for RLS" from everyone on the boards.

Sorry, there is no CURE ... Relief can be gained and sometimes 100% Relief can be gained, but Relief is Still not a cure.

Please read on...

Anyone know anything about this one? :?:

I have dealt with this woman since laast October. she knows nothing
about RLS. She never had it ; I am totally convinced!

I have been trying ti run her out of business, along with a group of people.
Dr. Wayne Henning politley denounced her book in the last issue of
Nightwalkers. He said it was a healthy diet, but would do nothing for RLS.
To be blunt, and I am, this woman is an idiot and is just out to make a buck! :x She has informed me that here next book is going to be on "sexuality". this ought to be a good one!
I bought her book just to see what it was I was so upset about. I bought it a t$9.95 in Oct.
and now it is up to a whopping $19.95. unless it has gone up again.
I am in the main group - delliott@sover.net . email me if you want, and i can send you some files.

Thanks for listening! :)

Ok, below is the "polite denouncement" (as Donna so eloquently put it!) which appeared in the Winter 2004 edition of Nightwalkers.

Please read it before you decide if it is worth parting with your already hard-earned cash!

Book Review Reviewer: Wayne Hening, M.D.

The Cause and Solution to Restless Leg Syndrome: Revealed for the First Time
Marie and Jeffrey Goodwin

The authors claim that RLS is caused by a diet relatively rich in salt (sodium). According to their theory, reduced sodium intake will cure RLS along with a host of other disorders and discomforts. Indeed, most of the book consists of advice on how to maintain a low-sodium diet, and it actually focuses more heavily on diet than on RLS.

The authors – who are not physicians or scientists, but claim to be studying to become “doctors of naturopathy,” a field not recognized in traditional medicine – provide no solid evidence that reducing salt intake will cure RLS. They offer no data based on clinical trials or blinded studies of the kind generally accepted within the medical community. The reader is expected to accept the authors’ word for their claims, although they bolster their arguments with a variety of (mostly popular) sources in the holistic tradition that rejects most modern dietary innovations.

I can’t say for certain – since I’ve never tested or studied the idea that a reduced intake of dietary sodium won’t benefit from RLS. Indeed, the diet the authors suggest appears to be a healthy one that would provide a variety of nutritional benefits. It’s not likely to prove harmful to anyone who tries it, other than to individuals who require increased salt intake (such as those needing to maintain blood pressure or who have adrenal insufficiency). They also suggest the use of magnesium supplements, a recommendation that has some basis in clinical literature. I suspect, however, that a reduction in salt intake will have little effect on severe RLS. Contrary to the authors’ hypothesis, RLS does not appear to be a disorder of muscle hyperexcitability, but instead a problem of abnormal activity in the central nervous system.

The role of psychological factors in RLS and its assessment is well known, and gives rise to a placebo effect in many trials. The low-salt diet will remain unproven until it is tested in a blinded fashion against a “placebo” diet (one that includes normal amounts of dietary salt). Because such a study has not been done, I can’t specifically recommend the reduced salt diet as treatment for RLS. On the other hand, since it appears to provide the elements required of a healthy diet, I see no reason to discourage individuals from undertaking a personal trial. To its credit, the book offers a variety of suggestions about making a low-salt diet fulfilling and palatable, and practical advice on how to manage it.

The book is published as an e-book, downloadable from the authors’ website for $14.95.

Reality check: somebody is told that she is a most annoying person but not told why? But was also told do not take it personally? How can you not take a personal insult personally?

I was told that this discussion board was started in February this year. It is also obvious from the list of participants. How could you have been watching it for 5 years???

Words ought to mean something otherwise why use them?

No, Sole! I am afraid he is serious and is trying to be destructive. I was surprised that we were not infected by someone like that before.

The best thing to do is probably to ignore such a trublemacher.

Me?? Annoying?? WooHoo!! That's on par with calling me a B***h. And if you know the definition of that then you know that you have just given me the ultimate COMPLIMENT ... Thanks so much!

You've just made my Monday Morning - there's nothing like starting a new day with a long and hearty laugh!!

I am who I am, and those who accept me for who I am (and there seem to be a lot of people on this site who do, for starters) know that I am a loyal friend forever.

I speak my mind and for those who cannot agree to disagree with what I say need to take a looooong hard look at themselves before trying to insult others in a public forum whilst hiding cowardly behind "guest".

For those who cannot accept me for who I am, it's your loss, not mine!!

Nadia - Annoying?!!!!!

Post by jan3213 »

Nadia, this is Jan

Well...........I have just a few things to say. Since I joined, in May I think it was, you have been nothing but supportive and helpful. I don't think those two words are the definition of annoying!!

This is a forum where people exchange ideas, where people are free to either agree or disagree. It is up to each individual whether or not they want to participate. No one is forcing them. That's why there are several different categories from which to choose. Occasionally, someone may misunderstand what is written in a post and perhaps get a little sensitive (?), but usually misundersandings are cleared up. We're a family--families don't always agree. The bottom line is, we all have one goal--to help people with RLS and to ultimately help ourselves--and to educate the medical community!!

Nadia, you have unselfishly helped so many people, researching websites, finding doctors, listening, offering advice, and sympathy (I have been the recipient of your sympathy), all the while suffering yourself. I applaud your courage, your graciousness, your intelligence, your humor, and your humility. And, I want to publicly thank you.

Going out on a very very long limb here

Post by sardsy75 »

OK, I'm going out on an extremely long limb here and am going to expose another side of me which could possibly cause some of my friends in here to turn away from me. But that is a risk I am willing to take. Those who are my true friends accept me for who i am.

I am going to explain very, very briefly, the "cause" of what is now my extremely focused positive outlook on life.

As I mentioned in my update post in my diary (RLS Forum -> New To RLS -> Prescription Drug Side Effects) I have been keeping up with my massage and craniosacral therapy sessions over the past few months.

These weekly sessions with Marion have been very intense one hour energy renewal and meditation sessions.

The "quantum leap" that Marion commented on me having made, was not only because I have made a huge recovery healthwise in the past couple of weeks; but that I have become far more spiritually aware and at peace with my surroundings and with who I am within this universe. This journey in itself has been extremely emotional and exhausting. However, it has been worth every second.

I meditate every morning and every evening ... clearing and reenergizing my chakras (the "energy centres" within my body) and tonight as I meditate I will been concentrating the most on clearing my manipura (solar plexus) and anahata (heart) chakra and because "Guest" has done such a good job today of draining my energy just by using simple words, I will be mentally cutting the etheric psychic cord between myself and them. I am willing to forgive "Guest" for draining me and release them fully to the light.

To Guest:

As I concentrate on my manipura chakra, I am willing to release that part of me that irritates me when I think of you.

Everyone in my life shares my goal in enjoying perfect love. I am blended with the one spirit who is the truth of every being whom God created. I am one, one, one with all of life - and I give thanks for this truth.

The Archangel Michael surrounds my heart with his healing energy and escorts the darkness you have caused away from my heart so that he may take it to the light for purification and transmutation.

As I concentrate on my anahata chakra I am willing to forgive myself and others for any mistakes in thinking, which were made during this day. I choose peace of mind in exchange for releasing these errors in thought. I ask that all effects of these errors be forgotten in all of time by all concerned.

I give to the angels all of the memories of everything I have said, thought, heard and read today. I release these communications as I do not need them any longer. The angels take these communications to the light, where they are perfectly purified and returned to me in their pure state of love.

Good night and sweet dreams to all.
Nadia

Regarding the so-called book (actually a file download for USD$19.95) by Marie and Jeffrey Godwin:

http://www.answerfound.com/restlesslegs.htm

I decided to see if there were any other such pages at their site. The homepage does not link to this or any other pages, so I used Google Advanced:

http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

to search for all pages at answerfound.com which did not contain the word "blahhhh". This is a handy way of finding all pages at a site which Google knows of. The only page I found was:

http://answerfound.com/vo/vaginal_orgasm_every_time.htm

which is the same kind of thing, apparently developed after the RLS one, for USD$9.95, without her photo.

Re: miracle cure book

Post by Sara »

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen--

I have no knowledge of the book in question (not the first, OR the second :P ), however, I have some limited experience in publishing.

Personally, I'm always just a touch leary of books on specialties written by people who DON'T specialize in the subject or aren't personally affected by it.

It's NOT that fine books haven't been written through research alone, but usually the BEST books stem from a more personal, more grounded source. And they also usually don't come in sequence with 15 other unrelated subjects.

Sardsy, my best to you. I've seen you in action here and at We Move.

Everybody else, wishing you a restful evening!
Sara
