Well . . . prior to the medication and the dreaded augmentation, I was pretty successful doing this. I just stayed up until it was over (but my RLS was much milder and I only had it an average of a couple times a month). I remember reading that advice on a Website about 4 years ago. But, when I was at the RLS conference and as talking to DR B, he said it would follow you within a few weeks - after you adjusted to it. Maybe it worked for me because it wasn't constant. Maybe once it's constant, you can't fool it like that.
I get a little RLS when I go to sleep (about 1-2 AM) a few nights a week, and here and there I am awakened after my first sleep cycle with some (around 3 AM). What I don't know is if this is later than it would occur were I on a regular schedule. It might be that if I went to bed at midnight, I'd get a little then and some at 1:30 or 2 AM instead.
