Remedies and medications everyone else is trying for RLS?

Please share your experiences, successes, and failures in using non-drug therapies for RLS/WED (methods of relief that don't involve swallowing or injecting anything), including compression, heat, light, stretches, acupuncture, etc. Also under this heading, medical interventions that don't involve the administration of a medicine to the body (eg. varicose-vein operations, deep-brain stimulation). I have suffered from rls for 10 years, and I found a product that works instantly. It is ALLCALM, it is a mixture of calcium and magnesium. It is powder form and you add it to hot water, mix with juice and the rls goes away within minutes. I am new to this site, so if allcalm has already been discussed, please share the thoughts on this. If allcalm hasnt been discussed, the link is allcalm.com. I have brought the bottle to my doctor and she is researching similar products, I will pass on the i
nformation as it comes to me.
Its nice to know other people go through what I do, not that I wish it on anyone!

I don't recall hearing that particular product mentioned here, although some members do take cal/mag supplements. Where did you hear of it, and what is it supposed to be for?

The only thing my doc concentrates on is sleep deprivation. He dx's me caffeine free T-3s and what ever sleepaide he has next for me. Tried Trazodone for a month, worked great till it wore off as all the others will. On Cloral Hydrate now but it wore off too of course and eventually dumped it down the sink as I was getting a white chalky coating in the back of my throat. So I'm off to my doc's tomorrow to get new sleepers and maybe try that Mirapex too.

My question is why do drugs wear off faster for RLS suffers than other people? One thing I don't question (whether or not its from my RLS) is I seem to have a "super" human immune system to viruses. I used to kiss my ex whether she had a cold or not. If I did wake up with symptoms a few days later they would be gone the next morning and it would be like I never had it. Anyone else notice this "phenomemon" or maybe some other tolerance to things "normal" people aren't because of their RLS. Just trying to find anything positive in this living-nightmare we find ourselves in.
I call my pacing the "Waltz of the Damned". Anyone care to dance...?

OTC

I see someone mentioned "legatrin" and "allcalm." Maybe I will check into those. I am still on klonopin 1.25/night for 17 years. I don't seem to have developed a tolerance, as many of you say you have. Or maybe I have and haven't noticed? No, because if I increase it to 1.5 mg., I have a bad hangover. Also when I went to my sleep doctor years ago, to complain that I wanted to get off the drug, he said__HA, you are taking such a small amount! Most people take 8 mgs.! This can't be true.

I just saw some ad for a prescription medicine for this leg thing, and I'm considering it, but I found a good amount of relief from daily yoga.

That downward facing dog position stretches out my calves and the back of my legs like nobody's business. I started six months ago, and I haven't had a leg cramp since. I still have a funny buzzing in my legs that seems to get worse with stress and coffee, but it's more managable, and it doesn't keep me up at night anymore.

I'm a bit suspicious of medicine these days in light of these halfway unnecessary pills that ruin your heart valves.

Yoga has given me a whole bunch of other benefits that are unrelated to this leg thing too; I suggest you all check it out.

P.S. I thought the barbed wire thing was pretty funny. Perhaps fatigue has sapped the sense of humor from you guys.

I thought the barbed wire thing for funny for a brief moment, and then the cutting thing made it not funny. There are people who really do that. (Some of my students).

I have been having unbearable RLS pain for a few weeks. Not sure why. Hooked on OTC meds? And how come I NEVER have it during daytime sleep? I am taking 1 gram of tylenol or 800 mg of ibuprophen for the pain. Specialist next week!

Taking prescriptions but also trying the natural way

Post by Debbym »

I have been taking Requip (.05 mg) one to two times a day and Clonazepam (1 mg) one before bed, for over 7 years. I am tired of having to take prescription drugs. Clonazepam can be very additive.
A month ago I started taking Mangosteen Juice. It is a botanical from SE Asia with over 130 proven medical benifits. Research doctor, J.Frederick Templeman, said there has been good success with the juice and RLS. Dr. Templeman said it will probably take three months before I notice a change. I, also, take a Whole Food Energizer Multi-Vitamin. Since the juice also has many other proven benefits I will continue to take it and hope that in a few more months I can stop taking the prescription drugs.
That would be so wonderful !!!! I will let you know of my results. If you would like to get more information about the juice visit my website: www.gatesforhealth.com

Mirapex

Post by depotlady »

I just wanted to post this for users of Mirapex to be be VERY careful. I was put on Mirapex in Jan 2005 for RLS. I did not know until this week (July 11, 05) that some SERIOUS problems I have been having are side effects of this drug. I am now on Medical Leave to get off this Medication. Please be advised that Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior change (gambling, shopping or sex) is just the tip of the ice berg. The rest of it is Narcolepsy, or falling asleep without warning...like while driving!!! SEVERE abnormal dreams, night terrors, hallucinations, neck rigidity, abnormal thinking, insomnia, gastrointestinal problems (sharp pains in your abdominal cavity), nasal congestion, pnuemonia. The list is long. I was not told about any of this when I was given my Prescription. I

What you also need to know is that there are 2 Class Action Law Suit in progress right now in regards to this Medicine. One in Canada and one here in the USA...which might explain why my 2 doctors don't want to discuss this with me. I have found another physician who is helping me wean off this medication. If you don't believe me...Type in side effects of Mirapex in your Web Browser and learn for yourself. I don't want anyone to go through the Hell I have and will be going through as a result of taking Mirapex.

Hi depotlady,
That is why we stress that everyone get educated about RLS and it's TREATMENTS. Know your body and how it reacts to certain medications.
There is a different reaction in everyone to medications. Research the medications offered to you before you take them or have a prescription filled.
There are side effects with most/all medications. Many docs see some side effects as coomon or exceptable. It's a personal decision what is exceptable for a person.
I'm not saying that anyone should take or not take Mirapex. There are many that have used it for years and done very well.
But with any medication we decide to take, being educated about it before taking it is far safer. If you are taking any medication and find that your just not yourself, call your doctor. It could possibly be a side effect, common or not.

Thanks for the post.
