ASMR - Sleep Whisperers

Please share your experiences, successes, and failures in using non-drug therapies for RLS/WED (methods of relief that don't involve swallowing or injecting anything), including compression, heat, light, stretches, acupuncture, etc. Also under this heading, medical interventions that don't involve the administration of a medicine to the body (eg. varicose-vein operations, deep-brain stimulation). ASMR - Sleep Whisperers

Post by ViewsAskew »

I wonder how this would help us when we're in the hyper-vigilant state?

And many, many more!

I may try this later tonight....

Fascinating!
http://www.vice.com/en_ca/read/asmr-the ... an-explain
It's like WED, only pleasant - and it starts at the other end of the body. When it gets really strong, it spreads from the head down the spine and even to the legs, which is the best.

From the above website:
ASMR is a tricky feeling to describe, and I can only talk about it secondhand. From what I understand from conversations with ASMRers, it’s a tingle in your brain, a kind of pleasurable headache that can creep down your spine. It’s a shortcut to a blissed-out meditative state that allows you to watch long videos that for someone who doesn’t have ASMR are mind-meltingly dull. Not everyone gets this feeling, and though some people can get the tingles through sheer force of will, most depend on external “triggers” to set them off. Triggers can include getting a massage or a haircut or a manicure, or hearing someone talk in a soothing tone of voice

It's a completely un-explainable sensation; for example:
she described ASMR as feeling like “bubbles in your head,” and compared it to getting a scalp massage, but the sensation is on the inside. She went on: “It’s like a little explosion, and then just little sparkles and little stars going down [your back].
Doesn't that remind you of trying to describe WED sensations? People who don't have it can't understand the explanations of what it feels like.

But I listened to parts of a number of the videos, and I did not get the ASMR feeling. In fact, although the whispering was initially soothing, if it stopped for a while then started again, I found it really irritating and felt as if it was setting off WED symptoms. I am pretty sure it would have if I had been lying down relaxed.

I must admit to being a bit jealous! The only thing even close that I get is this: when we were little kids, my sister and I used to creep each other out by speaking in a very low voice an inch or so away from the back of the neck, just below the point where the spine enters the skull. On the recipient, this created a strong tingle down the spine, which made her gasp or cry out and within a second or two squirm away because it was simply unbearable, like a tickle. The more it was done, the more sensitive the recipient became, until even a slight movement near the neck could set it off. We subjected ourselves to it voluntarily, as kids will. Like it and hate it at the same time, like being tickled. I still have this sensitivity, but I have not met many other people who do. Of course, it's not the kind of thing that comes up in conversation.

I definitely liked the sound of The Water Whisperer. Never ever heard of ASMR before.
Ob boy.... I just love it when I get a shampoo/head massage at the hair salon .... and can feel how this might be relaxing.

I have been listening to asmr videos for a month or so and while I don't get tingles, I find them relaxing. They take my mind off my legs, somewhat. They help get me through the night .
