Even though New Zealand was originally settled by English and Scots (and of course, earlier, Maori) the Irish influence is huge. Today 12% of Kiwis have Irish blood. Sisters of Mercy came from Ireland from about 1850 to 1900 to teach and every second Catholic church in New Zealand seems to be called St Patrick's.
