A disease? Give me a break

Post by Guest »

Hello all,

Okay I clearly have "RLS". For my entire life I have always had the need to shake my legs and if I can't do that, my feet, toes whatever. I had the childhood "growing pains" and I also have periodic limb movements during my sleep. My legs jerk and it does often wake me up.
I knew I was a bit different since some people bounce one leg but I'm often doing both especially if I've been sitting for a while. I definitely have all the symptomes of "RLS".

However, I'm sorry but I can't believe the way you guys are talking about this! You keep calling it a disease. Cancer is a disease. Needing to move your legs constantly? Com'on! Give me a break!

I've had this my whole life and it totally isn't a big deal. I mean, my only real problems would be waking up from when I jerk, and when I drive people nuts in the movie theatre with my shaking the entire row lol.

I think it's INSANE to want to give yourself medication JUST for this. I mean why would you take a medication unless it's absolutely necessary?!?! I also don't get where people get off calling this a disease. Has anyone died from bouncing their leg too much? No.
Is it really all that important to seek treatment? No.

I mean, I can't believe that you guys would go to the doctor's for this! I mean, that's just wasting the Doctor's precious time when he could be treating a REAL disease.

That is just how I feel. Feel free to debate me. I am not trying to be offensive but these are just my gut reactions and opinions.

lol Okay I'm replying to my own thread.

I think I'm having trouble expressing what I really mean.

It's just that to me, anything could be turned into a "disorder" like this one.

For example, I often smack my elbows on things. It's annoying, it's unpleasant but I wouldn't call it a disorder. However, we sure could turn it into one:

Symptoms:
1. Do you often bang your elbows or other parts of your body on things?
2. Does this cause an unpleasant tingling sensation in your arm?
3. Do you often have visible bruises?
4. Even though you don't purposely bash your elbows into things, you often accidentally do causing pain?

Why if you answered yes to 2 or more you may have ULBD (unvoluntary limb banging disorder). Come join our support group where you can talk to other sufferers of this horrible disease.

I mean where does it end people!

It's like they need to make EVERYTHING into a disorder.

Can't sleep? Need to move all the time? Suddenly, it's not just a restless personality...no it's a disease! Must be medicated!

lol even as i type this I'm bouncing both legs but who cares!!!

Why does everyone seem to want to medicate everything in life and why are people so gung ho on telling themselves they have a disorder!

I just don't get it. I guess it just seems a little ridiculous to me.

Reality Check

Post by sardsy75 »

"GUEST" .... I love it when people drag out the soapbox in here, take a few pot shots at us all and then cowardly hide behind "GUEST" or "ANONYMOUS".

If you want to debate a topic in here ... put your money where your mouth is and let the whole world know your name.

Coming into this family and making comments as you have, al-the-while "safely" hidden behind "Guest" simply means you do not have the guts to face the consequetial responses such as the one you are reading right now.

Small reality check for you: RLS = Restless Legs SYNDROME.

Restless Legs SYNDROME is a PROVEN MEDICAL DISORDER of the BRAIN and CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM and "HELLO!!!" it requires the specialised attention of people called "NEUROLOGISTS!!!"

Yeesh, so what if a few people call it a disease; those of us who have the most extreme and chronic form of this SYNDROME call it all sorts of names; some of which are far from printable!

If you've been blessed with a mild case (which from your mindless ramblings seems to be the case - even IF you are bouncing your legs as you type) then thank your lucky stars.

You are right ... not everyone needs to be medicated for every little "scratch and bruise" they endure throughout life. But I hate to break it to you ... some of us do have to rely on medications!!

If you want to know how to help control your "jerks, accidental elbow/funny-bone bangs, bruises from running into chairs/tables in the middle of the night, whatever" feel free to check out http://www.rlsrebel.com where I'm sure you'll find a myriad of NON-drug therapies which will help you out.

Your condescending comments to those of us who are unfortunate enough to be living with the most extreme, horrific and frustrating Restless Leg SYNDROME symptoms (and the rest of our family) are not welcome.

Next you'll be telling us that Myalgic Encephamyelitis and Fibromyalgia are "all in our minds" as well! I invite you to take a walk in the shoes of those who have not only Extreme RLS, but ME, Fibromyaglia, and a myriad of other health problems as well. It would be a helluva big wakeup call for you!

You'd probably benefit from a chat to my husband sometime; he'll tell you what it's like to watch me screaming, crying and thrashing in sheer, utter & exhausted frustration and pain literally begging for someone to cut off my arms and legs; oh and that's not just for an hour or so... those episodes can go for days on end. I'm the one experiencing it, yet it scares him more having to watch me go through it!

Welcome to the 21st century "GUEST" ... where not only viruses have us on the back foot, but where the human body has evolved so much that medical science and research are failing to keep up ... hence the myriad of diseases AND syndromes which have no cure; where school age children are forced to carry syringes of adrenaline in their pockets in case they come into mere contact with a nut (and i mean Contact not Eat!!) and if that adrenaline is not administered within 5 minutes ... they die ... simple as that. What they have is NOT a Disease, or a Syndrome ... it's a mere ALLERGY. Would you like to drag Allergies into the debate as well???

Have you ever watched someone slowly die from Multiple System Atrophy ... where one by one, each of their major organs slowly shuts down on itself all the while knowing that there is no medication available to stop it???

Do a little more research next time before you go taking pot shots in groups like this. We are all here because we share a common problem and we are working together as a family to try and make each other's lives a little more bearable ... be it WITH drugs or WITHOUT drugs. Don't try to drag our positive outlook down to your negative levels!!
Nadia

My philosophy is simply this: Life is too short to be diplomatic. Your friends should not care what you do, or say; and for those who are not your friends ... their loss!!!

Sardsy,

In the world of Usenet the type of post offered by "Guest" is called a troll. Not the furry little gremlin 'troll' but rather drag your line behind the boat and see what you can haul in.

These people who consider themselves clever are actually self-indulgent nitwits of the variety who would use a cellphone in a theater for no other reason than they know it is annoying to others.

Trollers would benefit from a twelve-step program in AA (Aggravators Anonymous).

Dearest Sardsy, Hi Neph.
Forgive my intrusion, but Guest needs to be checked. I was happy to see that you had posted (Sardsy) as we have missed you great around here. Only to find you are yet again dealing with GUEST.

Guest I'm getting the feeling that your equally obsessed with our postings and it's members. You may even be one of us and lurking in the dark as guest. If this is the case I would like for you to know I, for one, would not feel the same about you. Probably no big loss to you, nor myself.

You say you mean not to offend anyone, yet you will not sign your name. Thus showing your trying to be offensive and your "yellow". Your a bully.
I'm glad you started your own thread, then we can at least ignore this thread as we can choose to ignore you.

Leave. You don't like it here, fine. Leave. We'll be fine without your name and honor or guest and yellow.
Sardsy, I truely hope all your day is one of peace and strength. Warm wishes and good thoughts from me to you. Neph have a wonderful day yourself.

HOlY CRAP!

Notice that in my post I did not use ANY INSULTS!

I can't believe how immature you people are. All I did was share my opinions and I did so without name-calling.

Also, the reason I am signed in as guest is because I didn't bother to register. BIG DEAL! I find it retarded that you accuse me of hiding behind the name "Guest" When I highly doubt sardsy75 is your real name. If you must know my name it is Ariana. THere happy now? I can't believe how immature you people are considering I'm probably a lot younger than most of you but you don't see me resorting to petty insults. How about debating my posts like adults rather than just going "Oh look at her she didn't sign in how dare she post as a guest" Grow up you big babies.

I'm sorry that you suffer from that pain but that to me is not "RLS" as this site describes it. It says "Maybe even mild pain" in the describtion. So if you are suffering that much maybe you have some sort of nervous system problem and not just the desire to bounce your leg. Also, where did I say that Fibromyaglia is not real disease?

And to the person who said I'm a bully? What the ****! Who am I bullying exactly! Also, I don't see how posting as "Guest" makes me a bully. You people are retarded IN THAT aspect. Seriously, what difference does it make if I had a registered name or not? You still wouldn't see my face! By the way, I would say EXACTLY the same thing in person!!! Unlike some of you, I am not a coward afraid to speak my opinion. Although, I highly doubt some of you would call me an idiot to my face. Especially when you realized that I did NOT USE ANY insults in my original posts. All I said was I didn't see how this was a real disorder.

I find interesting that you guys are so defensive. Seems to me that if you were confident that RLS was a real disorder than you wouldn't be so incredibly defensive and you would be open to a little friendly debate.

I was trying to have a little friendly debate but you people quickly brought it down with your immature insults! Which is sad considering your probably twice my age.

I didn't realize that in this forum different opinions were not allowed and if you dare to express them the "RLS Nazis" are going to jump down your throat rather than even address some valid points you may have made.

Ariana "Guest" seems like a very bitter person, maybe even somewhat troubled by something.

If she wants friendly debate, she should approach people in a friendly manner.

I find plenty debate on the boards, but I also find discussion, support, and information, which I'm certain all members would extend to Ariana as well.

ok lets go

Post by becat »

RLS NAZIS...........ok, lets go. Debate is left to those that offer educated, caring positions. Thought filled exchanges that will bring about advancement. Sometimes involving great spirit and a sense of improvement in the direction of undestanding one's standings. Yours is not in this spirit. You might be younger, I might be older, maybe time will tame your stir it up attitude. We debate many things here, we debate our healthcare professionals, we debate on a daily basis our pain. You were not, are not doing that.
Ariana. I feel greatly qualified to debate both RLS and NAZIS with you, as I am a lifer with RLS and my last name is German.
I'm not prone to mature debate when it's insincere and blatant game that only you are enjoying. Your tone throughout has proven to provoke and your enjoyment observed. Yes, your style of comment or how you've choosen to be heard is that of a bully. Poke, pinch, kick, and then get your dander up when someone comes back with the same intent. Why do you really care if people find comfort here? We are not dependent on you, nor are we reaching out to you to be here. We have come together in something that is effecting our lives and we are choosing to share with others that share our path. So, your offended by your treatment here....HINT. It's not cancer, your right, but you can't set limits for the rest of us because your higher sense of rightness, doesn't match ours. Why should you be the standard, the choosen one to enlighten us? Well, I believe you represent the popluation that most of us confront daily. Newcombers should not think that yours is the spirit in which we strive to follow. Yours is the spirit we have already fought.
I do take great offense to you belittling this site , it's members, and our choice of connection here. I take greater offense when you liken the defense of our family to the Nazis. I rather think it's freedom of speech to be here.More so freedom to defend what we have thoughtfully created. Even your freedom to be here. But don't mistake that freedom with the right to do as you please.
WTF RIGHT BACK. I wouldn't mine saying so myself face to face to anyone that throws such terms around so freely. My good sense tells me that mature debate knows better than to use such horrific names and labels to fight with. My German last name has proven to illicit these stabs in the past and I would be the first to tell you, IT"S ON. Those are not barbs throw with a light heart. THey are bitter, harmful and never well taken.
This is my last post to you. You've shown your heart, your intent, your level of care for others. That's all I needed to know.
Be well, I hope you truely don't get worse in your life with RLS. But God has a way of teaching us lessons unlearned the easy way. I hope we are here for you the day you do need us. We are good people just trying to share and help support others, while getting the same for ourselves. Yours is not the thread of hope and heart. But that's ok, it takes all kinds, you simply remind us all how lucky we are to have found the people here.

You didn't have to use any outright insults, your whole post was a subtle general insult.

guest wrote:I can't believe how immature you people are. All I did was share my opinions and I did so without name-calling.

Now there's an outright insult!

guest wrote:I find it retarded that you accuse me of hiding behind the name "Guest"

Lookout, there's insult number two!

guest wrote:When I highly doubt sardsy75 is your real name. If you must know my name it is Ariana. THere happy now?

Heads up Ariana, if you had've bothered to read my signature which is at the bottom of EVERY post I make you'd know my name ... are YOU happy now?

guest wrote:I can't believe how immature you people are considering I'm probably a lot younger than most of you but you don't see me resorting to petty insults.

Man, you're on a roll with the insults now LOL! Oh, and if you read the rest of my signature and checked out my bio, you'd know that i'm probably a helluva lot younger than YOU think.

guest wrote:How about debating my posts like adults rather than just going "Oh look at her she didn't sign in how dare she post as a guest" Grow up you big babies.

And the insults are just rolling in now LOL

guest wrote:So if you are suffering that much maybe you have some sort of nervous system problem and not just the desire to bounce your leg.

You obviously missed the first part of my initial reply post to you so I'll just remind you:

sardsy75 wrote:Restless Legs SYNDROME is a PROVEN MEDICAL DISORDER of the BRAIN and CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM...

Do I need to spell that out for you again??

Guest wrote:You people are retarded IN THAT aspect.

Oooo look, another insult LOL

guest wrote:You still wouldn't see my face! By the way, I would say EXACTLY the same thing in person!!! Unlike some of you, I am not a coward afraid to speak my opinion. Although, I highly doubt some of you would call me an idiot to my face.

Don't tempt fate dear girl! Oh, and karma has a unique way of catching up with everyone.

guest wrote:All I said was I didn't see how this was a real disorder.

Then it's probably about time you did a bit of research and reading up on RLS ... all you have to do is type "+restless +legs +syndrome" into any search enging on the net and you'll have access to enough information to keep you occupied for years.

guest wrote:...than you wouldn't be so incredibly defensive and you would be open to a little friendly debate.

Oh, we're open to friendly debates alright ... but there's a knack to starting a friendly debate, which you kinda forgot to use. You came in attacking with guns blazing right from the outset and then expected us to be nice? Don't attack a group who have worked hard as a family to research this disorder; offer advice and comfort to newcomers who are scared and confused; who are there for each other day and night when we are going through our darkest times; and who are currently undertaking an enormous project (off our own backs) to help our healthcare providers and reserchers to understand what it is that we go through each and every day of our lives.

Oh, and another thing ... "adult level debates" don't sink to the level that you did when you resorted to using foul and offensive language!

guest wrote:I didn't realize that in this forum different opinions were not allowed and if you dare to express them the "RLS Nazis" are going to jump down your throat rather than even address some valid points you may have made.

I'm yet to find a valid point in your posts. As for the RLS Nazis, now you're getting personal with the insults ... as Becat said, her family heritage is German; well, my family heritage is Jewish; but you don't see Becat and I at each other's throats do you?

Ahhh, well that's got my morning off to a wonderfully humourous start LOL. My legs were buggin the crap outta me when I woke up this morning, but having a theraputic "debate" in here just took my mind completely off them! So, thankyou, Ariana!

P.S. - Becat, I am truly going to enjoy a peaceful day ... I spent a few hours at the botanic gardens yesterday, soaking up the sun's energy and boosting my energy levels from the beautiful nature around me (although a little rain would be nice right about now - dry would be the understatement of the year!).

P.S. - Neph - sometimes there's nothing more fun than waking up to see a troll amongst the group; I particularly enjoyed the "annoying" insult I copped the other week ... i was still giggling about it days later. As for those self-indulgent nitwits who leave their phones on in a movie theatre I have no qualms about giving them a rather colourful earful loud enough for the rest of the patrons to hear ... and you can always guarantee an instant sigh of relief from the rest of the audience in the sense of "geez i'm glad someone had the guts to tell that nitwit off."

I think that is a good bit of what I was trying to say in my humble little reply to Guest (Ariana). I also wanted to tell this bitter person that if she wants to be part of the group to approach in an open manner and folks will be open to her even yet.

I Just Couldn't Stay Out of This One!!!

Post by jan3213 »

Well--It's Jan

What CAN I say!!!

I always find it interesting when people who seem to know absolutely nothing about a subject (e.g. Guest) assume they know EVERYTHING about said subject, don't the rest of you? I think the old addage "walk a mile in my shoes" might apply here. I also think it's very interesting when people have to resort to rude--no, no, that isn't quite the word I'm looking for--let's see--gutter--yes, that's it--gutter languge, because, perhaps, they can't, or are unable to, express themselves in a more appropriate way. I really think you are a sad, sad person, Guest. There are many, many "syndromes" or "diseases" that I know nothing about which people suffer from. I do not profess to be perfect nor do I think that I am better than anyone else. However, I do think I am a compassionate person and would never dismiss anyone's pain or affliction as being "nothing" or "all in their minds" or whatever it is you were trying to say. We live in a big world with a lot of people who we come into contact with every day. We never know what those people are going through--what crosses they have to bear--what problems they have whether physical or something in their lives they are just having to deal with. I feel sorry for you Guest. I think you must be an empty person. I hope you never have a syndrome or disease like RLS and you find yourself on the "other side" meeting someone like yourself.

Except Ariana, whom I am ignoring for the time being (vide infra).

I enjoyed reading the clever reactions from our well meaning members to this person. Still, I think by completely ignoring her would have been a better way of dealing with the type. We know she is wrong. Do you think we can ever convince her of that? No! Are we that sensitive that we have to pick up every glove thrown in our direction? Anyone can claim they have RLS! So what if she thinks we are idiotic? No skin off our nose.

I just hate seeing time wasted on people who did nothing to deserve it.

Now, I am back to Ariana. There is a good, useful way to let your opinion known. I am inviting you to complete one of our questionnaires where it would be put to good use. E-mail me for the questionnaire.

this person is stupid...

Post by corynski »

Pardon me, but this person IS stupid, and has obviously never experienced the pain, but only the minor discomforts of this disease.

Read the testimonials and the research and hope you never do really have some RLS and Neuropathic pain, if in fact it is progressive.

Try another board, idiot.
