Kratom and Blood Pressure

Here you can share your experiences with substances that are ingested, inhaled, or otherwise consumed for the purpose of relieving RLS, other than prescription medications. For example, herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, diet, kratom, and marijuana (for now) should be discussed here. Tell others of successes, failures, side effects, and any known research on these substances. [Posts on these subjects created prior to 2009 are in the Physical Treatments forum.]

Kratom and Blood Pressure

Post by jul2873 »

I've been taking kratom for my WED for almost a year now. Before I started, my blood pressure was usually around 130 over 90. The women in my family have a history of high blood pressure and strokes, and I was dreading the day I would have to go on high blood pressure medicine.

Well, since starting kratom, I've had it checked four times, during various doctor appointments. The highest has been 120/80. Twice it was 112/70, and today it was 110 over 68. Since I'm a 70 year old woman--who has actually gained a few pounds this year--even the tech taking the blood pressure was startled.

I'm guessing it's the kratom, as I can't think of any other thing I'm eating or doing differently this year. At any rate, it made my day!

That's nice!

Did you do a search to see if anyone else has noticed this? Could be an interesting thing for researchers to study if it routinely does this.

Good idea, Ann. I did a search and didn't find much on kratom and blood pressure (contradictory opinions) but someone mentioned that you should take L-theanine and magnesium citrate and B vitamins (esp. L-theanine) while taking kratom to lower blood pressure. I have also been taking L-teanine and magnesium, and so did a search of L-theanine and blood pressure. Bingo. A number of studies indicate that L-theanine lowers blood pressure in individuals with high blood pressure, but does not seem to affect the blood pressure in people with normal blood pressure. So it may well have been the L-theanine--or maybe the L-theanine and the kratom together--that have had such a good effect on my blood pressure.

wow, easy win there! This is certainly worth noting for other people who might have high blood pressure.

I was doing a little reading last night and the Kratom plant contains a specific alkaloid or a chemical (called corynoxeine) that acts as a calcium channel blocker. Calcium channel blockers lower blood pressure, so it could certainly be the Kratom.

I naturally have low blood pressure, and it doesn’t seem to have had an effect on my blood pressure.

Here is a list of the different alkaloids in Kratom and their effects in the body:
