DEA backs down from making kratom a Schedule 1 drug

Here you can share your experiences with substances that are ingested, inhaled, or otherwise consumed for the purpose of relieving RLS, other than prescription medications. For example, herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, diet, kratom, and marijuana (for now) should be discussed here. Tell others of successes, failures, side effects, and any known research on these substances. [Posts on these subjects created prior to 2009 are in the Physical Treatments forum.]

DEA backs down from making kratom a Schedule 1 drug

Post by jul2873 »

Thanks to everyone who helped with this. The DEA has recalled its order to schedule kratom. It will now hold hearings and take comments until Dec. 1, 2016. So, for the time being anyway, we won!

A letter from the American Kratom Association:
-------
A HUGE WIN FOR KRATOM IN THE SHORT TERM, BUT A LONGER WAY TO GO!

AKA Members and Donors,

A huge win for kratom consumers was achieved today because of your generous support. Thank You! In case you haven't heard, today the DEA removed its notice to list kratom as a controlled substance under their emergency authority.

The DEA will now initiate a new process that will allow a public comment period until December 1, 2016. When the DEA began this process on August 30, no one thought we had a chance to achieve this result, but we did thanks to your support and the thousands of kratom supporters who signed petitions, made phone calls, contacted members of Congress and provided financial support to us.

Unfortunately, the battle is not over. We must continue our advocacy efforts to the DEA and now the FDA as well. We must make every effort to stop kratom from becoming a controlled substance. Therefore, we are asking you to continue supporting AKA with your words, actions, and financial contributions.

AKA will need to develop scientific submissions to counter arguments made by the FDA and kratom opponents, while simultaneously continuing our legal, lobbying, media, and advocacy work. Your contributions allowed us to hire the best political and legal minds -- and they paid off! We need to continue those relationships while adding a new scientific outreach program. Please help us so we can continue our efforts on behalf of all kratom consumers. Some of our kratom friends have significant hardships, so we count on those with spare funds to protect all our friends, many who now feel like family to us.

Again, we cannot thank you enough for your support. We proved that we can make a difference and now we need your continued support to win this fight.

Sincerely,
Susan Ash
