I want to add that Naltrexone has a short half life of 4 hours. So by taking it once a day in the morning I had little in my system at night, when the eating and sex control issues were occurring. So I need to take Naltrexone twice a day. If you aren't experiencing impuls control issues and are augmenting then you can experiment to find the optimal level and timing of your dose. Veldon, I encourage you to discuss Naltrexone with your doctor. Let me know if I can help. Richard. Bowen.Richard.L@gmail.com

Aipulu, your experience could be ground-breaking and if I were still augmented on a d/a I would definitely be trying naltodextrone on the strength of it. It could save misery to many if it works for others. Have you thought of contacting Dr. Buchfuhrer on his patients' questions page (rlshelp.org). I would have thought it would be worth trying to get the word out there.

Legsbestill, I did email Dr B about this, since he had corresponded earlier with me and said that patients with my symptoms he usually puts on opioids. I didn’t get a response, which was disappointing. I thought that maybe the top RLS researchers hear from lots of people about things that worked for them. So I am hoping to get others with augmentation or impulse control issues to verify that Naltrexone works beyond me. Then Naltrexone might get the attention of the top researchers.

So if anyone tries this, please contact me about your results, whether good or no good.

I am using neupro at the moment. It is working well to still the legs. Normally I take myself off it after 6 weeeks or so to avoid augmentation and use Kratom for a few weeks instead. Kratom works reasonably well but it only lasts about 4 hours so have to take a second dose in middle of night. This sometimes leads to a druggy feeling in the morning. Also sometimes I am very alert with Kratom and don’t sleep.

I am back at work now and could do without these difficulties so I have got a prescription for naltrexone and intend to try it if I feel augmentation/impulse control issues setting in. I will post with results though at present have no signs of augmentation.

If you want to switch to something, I am not sure Kratom is the best choice. Kratom seems to work like an opioid which works in a similar way to a Dopamine Antagonist. I remember seeing that opioids and DAs worked in a similar way in one of the RLS presentations. To truly get a break I would suggest going to something like Lyrica or Neurontin if they work and you are not affected by the side effects of depression that can occur. Another option would be a drug from the benzodiazepine group. I actually had pretty good luck with Alprazolam for a while. I had to take it twice in one night but still felt rested in the morning. Also, try as many of the physical treatments that you can such as stretching, foam rolling, massage stick etc. during your break from the neupro.
