5yr old with RLS

RLS occurs more frequently in certain populations, including people with end-stage renal disease, women during pregnancy, and people with iron deficiency. Also, RLS/WED in the elderly and children brings other challenges. Sharing your experiences may be extraordinarily helpful to others.

Hi gilly22 and welcome. I am so sorry that your 5 yr old son has rls. I know there are posts on this board about children having it.

I know other members whose children have rls can answer your questions. I am sorry as with not having any children I am not able to answer that for you but still want to welcome you and know you will get alot of suppport here.

Please keep us posted on how he is doing.

Gilly, go the the special populations section. That's where of the posts about kids are. We don't have any regular members with kids, so you're not likely to get too many answers, but you can read all the older posts. We've compiled things that work and have put them in a "sticky" post in that section.

Hope that helps some. It must be a little frustrating.

Oh, there is a chapter in the newest book about RLS regarding kids and RLS. So, it might be worth getting it from Amazon - it's by Buchfurer, Hening, and Kushida.

Gilly,
I'm so sorry that your son was diagnosed with RLS. I have had it since I was a young child, but no one knew what it was then and I could get no help. Your son is a lucky little fellow to have a parent who cares enough to find a diagnosis for what some would just call "fidgeting." Best wishes as you search for ways to help him and know that you are among people who care and we will do what we can to support you as you care for your son.

My 7 y.o. was also just diagnosed with RLS. He went in for a sleep study and was found to have PLMD 20 times per hour on average. Typically a RLS diagnosis would be made with 5 times per hour limb movements. It shocked us. We know he was tired beyond his control but with 11 hours of sleep we couldn't figure out what the deal was so I had the sleep study done to check for sleep apnea because my husband has that. I was really shocked to hear RLS from the sleep specialist. They are recommending Mirapex or Clonidine. We're not sure what to do. Mirapex is scarey with all the class actions for addiction. We are consulting with the sleep specialist, and a pediatric neurologist to try to figure out what to do. Have you gotten any answers on how to treat it?
Thanks for the post.

You may also want to ask if Requip can be used in children, if you feel other treatments are not an option

Hi Colleen and welcome. I am so sorry your 7 yr old boy has been diagnosed with rls. With me never having any children, I am not very knowledge in that department, but will be here to support you anytime you want to talk, vent or whatever.

I am sure other members will post and please keep us posted on how the drs for the sleep specialist and pediatric neurologist turns outs. I really pray and hope that you find relief for your little boy. Please do check out all the possibilities what meds he can take as with being at such a young age. You are a good mom to be concerned.

Hi Coleen
I also have a 6 year old with rls and plmd. It is awlful for children. The lack of sleep is a problem within itself. I would love to chat about our similar situations. Good Luck!

Hi Chelsea - I also posted a longer reply to the 12 year old with RLS PLMD. Check there. I would love to chat more with you also. I have a chiro friend who thinks there's a homeopathic remedy. I'm too scared to try something like that with my kid.

You will find out so much from your sleep study. We put our name on a cancellation list and got in within 2 weeks. They called us one morning and someone had cancelled due to illness so we went that night. Might what to try that.
