Propanolol?

Post by jul2873 »

My daughter was given propanolol for her RLS, which has just become more severe. She is also taking vyvanse and Wellbutrin for adhd/depression. I've searched these boards and can't find much on propanolol which she said isn't helping much. Plus we can't figure out why the RLS has suddenly gotten worse. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

The following is a quote from the book "Clinical Management of Restless Legs Syndrome", by Lee, Buchfuhrer, Allen and Hening. In the section titled "Other Pharmacologic Options"

At present, there is little empirical evidence or experience for the use of these agents, and none are approved by the FDA for therapy of RLS. However, in cases where standard are not effective or tolerated, RLS specialists have considered them. They include amantadine, botulinium toxin type-A, clonidine and propranolol.

So, your doctor's choice is a bit unusual, but not without some basis. If it works, great. And if not, then time for him/her to consider something else.

Propranolol (Inderal) is a beta blocker drug used for high blood pressure, social anxiety, tension, angina, tremors, migraine headache. It is considered to have few side effects.

I did a search on Propranolol and its relationship with RLS and could find very little. This is one result:
"Propranolol in the treatment of restless legs syndrome induced by imipramine withdrawal ." American Journal of Psychiatry, 143(7), pp. 938a–938
