I just watched the presentation. Dr Silber discussed iron's role in the treatment of RLS. The podcast's target audience is doctors and other medical professionals. The thing that I learned is that Mayo has recently found that ferritin test results depend upon the laboratory technique used. There is one techinque that he referred to as the Beckman method and another that he called the Roche method (Beckman and Roche are lab test equipment manufacturers. He said that Mayo has converted to only using Roche but that the Roche results require higher values (80 to 120 vs about 80).
He also discussed factors that a doctor should take into account when considering oral vs IV iron and the type of IV iron. There are things such as bariatric surgery and distance traveled to the IV site that need to be taken into account.
Finally, he said that a ferritin test should not only be taken while fasting, but that if you are taking oral iron (even a multivitamin), that iron supplementation should be stopped two to three days in advance of the blood draw.

Thanks for the summary! There is another one in this series - this said it was #2, if I remember correctly.Rustsmith wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 8:27 pmI just watched the presentation. The earlier podcast was also be Dr Silber and was an introduction to the diagnosis and treatment of RLS. He didn't say anything that anyone on this board doesn't already know, but if you want to hear what he has to say, you can find it at
