Considering trying Requip.

Post by Anonymous »

HI all,

I'm new to this site and the discussion board. I'm 34 and have had a diagnosis of RLS since 97. Since then I have been on Klonopin continuously (except for 2 pregnancies). I have tried neurontin and now also Gabitril to help control the RLS. I'm experiencing a lot more symptoms of late (especially during the day) and don't want to increase my Klonopin. I've spoken to my Dr. about requip but she's concerned about the long term effects on the neurotransmitters given my fairly young age. I'm at the point where I really don't care what the long term effects are. I just want some relief now. I was wondering if anyone has any personal anecdotes about their successes/failures with Requip and any side effects or concerns regarding long term effects.

Any input would be helpful.

I have had great success with Requip. I take .5mg which is all my body could tolerate and it works great. I have no more restlesslegs during the night and it actually makes me a little sleepy which is good because I suffer from another sleep disorder called parasomnia. I have had RLS since I was a kid so as a 47 year old I am so happy to finally give it a name and take a med that is directed to help with the awlful symptoms of RLS.

micheller, I'm not sure I follow your doctor's logic. RLS is a lifelong, chronic, and often progressive disorder. You need sleep and quality of life. The dopamine agonists are not something that is only given to older people. They are currently testing them on teenagers.

Just my point of view, but t is important to think about long-term effects, only because at some point you may have to get off of one and switch to another. Because of that, I personally like to know what might happen so that I am not surprised later on. But you have a very valid point, I think, that you are stuck with this disease and need to have something that is effective, even if it does have some side effects. You just need to know what those side effects might be.

Requip and Mirapex are considered by the RLS specialists to be the first choice for people with daily RLS that prevents them from sleeping or interrupts their sleep. You'll find more about it in some of the threads, but I think these drugs work well for the majority of people who take them. If you read otherwise here, my theory is that people who do well on them do not need to post here! So most of the happy people never bother.

It's likely, based on what the RLS specialists say, that Requip will be helpful, and much more helpful than the other drugs were. Hope this helps. Hopefully you will be able to read some posts, too. There is so much good information here. A lot of it you can take to your doctor to help him or her help you more effectively. There are so many good threads - I think this message contains links to them all. if you are so inclined, you'll have good reading material for awhile  .
