Tramadol????

Post by gracey17 »

Hello Everyone! I am new here. :D I have been dealing with this since I was about 10. People just thought I was crazy then. I am 35 now. I am taking Mirapex and Clonazepam. I am taking 2 of the Clonazepam at night and one in the morning. This sure seems like alot. But my questions is this.....Has anyone heard of Tramadol being used treat RLS. My dad's doctor gave it to him and it works great for him. Please let me know if anyone else has tried it.

I have been on Tramadol for two years and it has worked great. Of course, now I am pregnant so I am having to get off it, but normally I would take 6-8 a day and feel great.

 Thank you for letting me know. I have one of those doctors that will only try what everyone else it using...namely the mirapex and the clonazepam, which he also gives me for anxiety. But it makes me tired. I would really like to give Tramadol a try as I have heard it works. Can I ask how my milligrams you take? Maybe I need a little of this and a little of that, until I find the right combination.

Hi Gracey,

I take Tramadol for daytime RLS; at night I take Requip and Neurontin.

I have 24/7 severe RLS and Tramadol helps a lot. The extra benefit is that it gives me (some) energy. If you want to take it for nighttime use you have to try and see if it doesn't stop you from sleeping. It does to a lot of people.
Dr Buchführer says not to exceed 100 mg a day because or, addiction/tolerance problems. Start with the lowest dose. I live in Europe and use drops instead of pills, so that I can take what I really need and not be obliged to either take 50 or 100 grams. Dr B also suggests to stop T for 2 days every fortnight to prevent addiction/tolerance, if possible.

Tramadol

Post by Butterfoot »

Hi Gracey17,

If you look at the sticky notes in New to RLS, you'll find some with lists of the many medications used to relieve RLS since what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another. Your doc should know that "everyone else" is using alot more than just Mirapex and Clonazepam. Those are just two of many different meds. Tramadol is listed as one of the narcotic meds that works well for RLS. Your doctor may be hesitant to prescribe it, as so many doctors are, because it is an opiate analgesic. I know when the Sinemet and Permax I'm on for RLS don't seem to be working, I can count on getting relief with a Percocet. Although Tramadol isn't as strong, I'm pretty sure it would work as well to relieve the RLS symptoms.

It wouldn't hurt to page off the list of medications on this discussion board and take it with you to your next appointment. It may help your doctor see the light and hopefully work with you instead of dictating to you what you'll take. After all, it is your body, and you know more than anyone what's affecting it.

Hope this helps. Again, check the sticky notes. They're loaded with information.

tramadol

Thanks you Margot for the advice on the sticky notes. Luckily I had another doctor that I am working with on my lower back pain prescribe me Tramadol! And it works like a charm! So I will be letting my family doc know about this when I see him next week. I can't tell you how much better I feel overall. Now, my concern is that because it is an opiate that he will not like me being on it for very long, yet someone earlier said they have been on it for 2 years. So, for now I am taking Tramadol and the Clonazepam and it is working.... :D

Tramadol

Post by Butterfoot »

Gracy,

I'm really glad to hear you're feeling so much better! :D

Like Lovechild and Cornelia, quite a few people use some form of pain medication for their RLS on a daily basis. I've been on Percocet for over a year and take it daily for chronic tendonitis pain, so don't want to take it every night, but I know I can always count on it helping on those nights the AD's don't seem to want to work. And I certainly don't want to continue increasing the dosages of those medications with all their side effects. Just a 5 mg tablet will give me a night of relief. If it works and you don't abuse it, I say HOORAH FOR YOU! 8)

Keep on feeling good!

I am so glad that asked about Tramadol. I had a doctor prescribe it to me today. I was on Hydrocodone but I started with a new doctor and he refused to give me another refill. It is understandable but also very frustrating becuase 1) I am not an addict and 2) it was working nicely for me. But I am glad to hear that Tramadol is effective.

Tramadol Works for Me

Post by Marvin »

I have been taking tramadol for several years for my RLS. I heard about it from a friend who had RLS. I talked to my doctor about trying it. He was more than happy to write the Prescription.

The first night I took a 50 mg tablet. I slept like a baby - the first time in years. I discovered that one half a tablet did the same thing. So, for a couple of years I took just 25 mg each night. I take it about 2 hours before bedtime.

After a couple of years, though, I had to increase it back to a whole tablet (50 mg) which I've been taking now for a couple of years. It's the only thing I've found that helps.

I have also discovered that eating very light at supper helps. Just some fruit and bread of some kind. Nothing high fat or high protein.

I hope it works as well for you. RLS is no fun!!

After trying other RLS recommended medications, my doctor is prescribing Ultram/Tramadol and hydrocodone ie lortab, vicodin, for my RLS.

If your doctor has questions regarding the use of opiods you might suggest that they contact RLS specialist Dr. Mark Buchfuhrer email & telephone info at Medical Consultation for RLS link on rlshelp.org website.

Fortunately I was able to find a doctor who was willing to discuss treatment protocal with Dr. B.

When taking tramadol I get good relief of my restless legs and arms but then it seems to keep my mind going! Anyone else with this problem? It seems to take away my sense of fatigue and so I am up at an inopportune time anyway. Possibly dose dependent as I only take 25 mg or less by breaking the tablets. Also, even though I am awakened by the tramadol my judgement is poor and coordination can be a little off (like closing my fingers in a cabinet door etc. so could never imagine taking it during normal waking hours for relief.
Anyone else with this experience?

I've seen others write that they can't take tramadol at night and that they only take it during the day, because of the slightly "perky" effect of it. I haven't tried it myself, though, just seen other people post about it. You may need to find something different to take in the evening in order to get better sleep. Have you tried anything else?
