Restless Legs and anemia

Post by Jenne1950 »

Before I could get the blood tests requested by my sleep doctor who suspected anemia had caused my rls to worsen suddenly, I was hospitalized by my primary care physician with severe anemia and needed to have 4 units transfused. Guess whose legs calmed down? 8)

Make sure your Doctor does the right blood test. A traditional "iron test" is the "Hemoglobin". Mine is always normal.

However, my Serum Ferritin (the RLS causing one) is usually low.

Also, people may need to educate their GPs about RLS and Serum Ferritin. My Serum Ferritin was "normal" at 18, according to my GP.

However, b/c i have such Bad RLS Calf Pains, and irresistable excessive daytime sleepiness ("EDS")from Dancing All Night (as shown in my sleep study, etc) -- my Sleep Doctor says he wants me Serum Ferritin (stored iron) to be up over 60.
