Augmentation, or something worse?

Post by Haggi »

I've been taking Mirapex for about 2 months now, .25 mg at night, and .125 mg in the afternoon. It's been working pretty well for me most nights.

The problem I seem to be having, is not that my legs are restless so much during the day, but that they seem weak. I'll be walking at work and it seems like I'm on the verge of collapsing at the knees.

The other thing I've noticed is a slight tremor in my torso area when I'm at rest. It's very slight, and it's barely noticible.

I've described some of my other symptoms in previous posts; the electric feeling I get in my back, (which comes and goes) and the urinary urgency (which is a lot better on the Mirapex).

Are these symptoms normal with Augmentation? I'm seeing a neurologist later this month at the advice of my sleep specialist.

augmentation or something worse?

Post by ctravel12 »

Hi Haggi and good to see you on the board again. I am not in the medical field, but I know when I was augmenting last year I was having rls 24/7 when sitting or laying down. When I would get up and walk it would sometimes go away. I never had the feeling that you described; however I am not saying that it is not augmenting but getting a medical advise is the best way to go.

Since you are going to see a neurologist this month, I would definitley bring this matter up to him.

I hope that they can get to the bottom of this for you and please keep us posted on how you are doing.

Augmentation or something else

Post by mcarlin »

I had augmentation last year. It was horrible. I was on sinamet and all of the sudden it stopped working. I couldn't sleep at all. I went to the doctor and was put on requip. Thank God it is working. I will tell you something. It is aweful lonely in the middle of the night for a rls person. You just want someone to take away the feeling. Be pro-active in your rls. Find a doctor that understands rls. You have to be the one to find the doctor. Don't give up. There is help out there.

Haggi, it sounds more like drug side effects to me, than it sounds like augmentation.

When I started Requip, I wondered if I would know if I had augmentation. When it happened, it was really obvious. Of course, mine happened so fast, and I had been on the drug for such a short time.

It was kind of like childbirth - I wondered if I would know when I was in labor. When it happened, I knew.

But I'm sure others have more subtle symptoms of augmentation than I had. All I know is that if your RLS gets more obviously worse - pain and creepy crawlies all day long - it's time to do something.

Haggi, it's definately side effects, not augmentation. I actually find from time to time that my legs are weak; I'm on Requip.

I will try to put my what ever in the mix. Right now I am going through a change over from one pain dr to a new one that knows about RLS. I am seeing him today because of serve back pain from 4 back surgeries. As many of you know I was taking six(6) requip a day for about 3 yrs. I started waking up in the morning with RLS and then little by little it started all day and they were so bad that I was hitting my legs and I couldn't stop kicking. I couldn't sit at the computer they were so bad let alone try to watch TV or read a book.

I was told to cut back to three(3) a day and then I decided to go off of the requip and I didn't sleep for three days. Lucky for me I got to see the new pain dr(love him) last Monday and he started me on Lyrica 50mg's, 3 times a day and to stay on the requip and take myself off of it slowly. Forgot to say I was taking Neurontin300mg's 5 a day.

Also he put me on oxycodone15mg's 4 a day for the pain. I'm going to see him this afternoon and he is going to give me cordisone shots in both hips.

So I'm hoping by next week I will be off of requip and no more augmentation. It is the worse thing to have along with serve back back. I don't know what he will put me on in place of the requip.

Last nite when I was at the computer chatting with my backrm friends I felt dizzy and like I might get sick. Also, having trouble reading the rm because I guess my eyes are getting dry  I plan on addressing all this stuff this afternoon and I hope I get to continue taking the pain med because it's helping. So like I said I don't know if it's reaction to the Lyrica or going off the requip. Good luck to you and I will keep you all posted. I also, agree that it would be nice if ppl were in our chat rm late at nite.Jeannie

Thanks for the advice. I can live with the side effects as long as the Mirapex still helps me sleep. I'll post an update after my appointment.

Now there's a simple, honest, and absolute truth.

I had to go unmedicated last week for almost a week, and I was in deep despair and loneliness as I thrashed alone, watching stupid and undistracting TV each sleepless night. I kept recognizing that what I was despairing for, and whom I was lonely for, were exactly what you said: someone to take away the feeling.
