WP, Sorry things have not been going well for you. Good luck with the new med and getting off the Sinemet. Hope that does the trick for you. What's the time line on the stimulator? Best wishes.

When Stim?

Post by wigglypain »

It was a year since I last tried the Sinemet. So I was willing to give it another short shot. One more night and I give up with it.

Not sure on when I am going for the stimulator, again. I saw a different doc in Georgia, was driving 215 miles every 2 weeks. Tried a trial stim that worked. Only had on lead placed in back. Out of network insurance $19,300.00 procedure for a 7 day use. It worked for me, through and really worked. Still needed pain meds for both arms though. My main doc had to take an extended leave of medical abcense(mysteriously). His replacement immediately accused me of not having the stim turned on, due to the fact that the medical magnets I work around erased the memory. Had no effect on my controls, though. So reported me to insurance as a failed test run and that I continued high use of pain med. Had my partner not been there to back me up that I had the thing running all the time she would have never believed me. Well, since Dennis never came back neither did I. Being in recovery and having pain is no walk in the park.
Will have to work with new implant doc on insurance negotiation and the financial leftovers. I am still paying the other clinic back $2100.00. Need to work fast, something is going down with me at work between that manager and my coordinator and the results for me I feel are not going to be fair and a good outcome.

WP, Again sorry that you are having such a difficult time and hope things will get favorably resolved soon.

I was going to post this quesion as another topic but will do so here as I am not sure how to pose the question in the first place. But, is there a mechansim or procedure an individual can request or access if they are confused or otherwise concerned about medical care or complex health issues. I guess I am thing of something like an independent "physician advocate." That is a review of your records and recommendations based on that review. Not making myself clear--even to myself. I guess I am concerned, from personal experience, that when an individual is referred to multiple specialist for similar or multiple problems that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing as they usually do not communicate as a team. Each touches a different part of the elephant so to speak and the big picture gets lost (meaning you and I) and the patient can be confused as to what the best course of action(s)s should be. I think in many instances a PCP is unable to sort this out and often is unable or unwilling to recommend a course of action different than that suggested by the referred to physcians. In any event I was wondering if there was a way that an individual could access someone to look at the big picture and assist the patient in sorting the treatment process. Ugh...words fail me and apologies.

Anyway, your situation reminds me of a need for something like this but again you seem to have sorted things out relatively well..I think?
Best of luck.

Hi Ed,
Document everything and have your partner do the same in a different calendar, just short notes and the exact dates will be helpful to you.

If you have a true friend at work, ask that they do the same for you.

I will keep you in my prayers.

Hang in there, we're with you.

Wish I had better advise for you.

Ed, In my last post I should have used the term "patient advocate" instead of "physician advocate." If you google "patient advocate" it will list several agencies/foundations which purport to help patients with complex medical issues involving insurance and job related issues. Don't know if any of these will have or can provide information which you might find useful. Again, best wishes and best of luck.

Post by crazy »

I'm tired and in pain, I wish my Dr. would give me something besides the Mirapex that I'm on. I see him this week so I hope he gives me something for the pain. The gabapentin knocked me out so I had to quit taking it so I'm not sure whats next....Any ideas what I should ask my Dr. for?

Angle for something low key, if he has been resistant.. I hate to pimp the stuff (I don't particularly like it but it works and is my only option) but you could ask for Tramadol. Or try for some Codeine or Hydrocodone.

Hi Crazy,

I wanted to tell you or give you a hint about your doc appt..

When you go in take 2-3 major issues that you feel needs to be addressed.

Ex: "doc, I have # of issues that we need to deal with today." They don't really listen to all you say, so make sure you cut your issues down to quick easy things for the doc to deal with.

I know it's not far to blanket statement any profession, but docs have limited time and often get that glazed over look, when we don't have a clear cut issue they can get to.

I hope it goes well and you, we'll up you in the moon and pray it does.

Let us know what is going on.
Hugs

It sounds like it's time for a new doctor. And you may need to arm yourself with a copy of the Mayo Clinic Algorithm, and a copy of Dr. B's book. I'm pretty sure Dr. B's book talks about RLS as being painful in a percentage of patients. What kind of doctor are you seeing now? A general doc or a neurologist or what? Maybe you could ask your current doctor to refer you to someone who will treat pain, since your doc isn't willing.

I just read in another forum that there's a formulation of codeine that's available OTC now in Canada - it's called co-co-something. Maybe that could get you through until you find a doctor who believes in the existence of pain.

There's also the medical marijuana option in Canada. Works for a lot of people for RLS and for pain.

Doctors can be such idiots sometimes.

Thank-you Lynn and Susan

Today I'm not as frustrated as i was. I guess my Doctor has to try all he can with whats available to him. I just get impatient sometimes, I want emmediate relief of this.... Patience is what I need at this point, and people like you who take the time to offer your help and ideas.

Thank-you so much!
