steroid medication

Post by Polar Bear »

Recently I had to have emergency attention for continuing head pain which has been diagnosed as Temporal Arteritis which is an inflammation of the temporal vein which runs from the back of the neck up and over the ear. No known cause and no cure. It is treated with steroid medication. The emergency attention is vital because this vein also feeds the veins to the back of the eye and it causes some degree of blindness in approx. 1 in 5 sufferers. Immediate steroid treatment prevents this.

Am I not a lucky lady that gave in to the pain and for the first time ever got 'out of hours' GP medical attention.

The reason for writing about this is that coincidentally or not, my rls went crazy the same day that I began the steroids and lasted for 3 days, despite rls meds.

I emailed Dr B who confirmed that this condition has no relation to rls and that also the steroid medication has no bearing on rls symptoms.

I wanted to share this little bit of information regarding the condition and the steroid medication in case in was of any relevance to any of our members.

OM Goodness, PB! Unfortunately it's like RLS in that there is no known cause nor known cure.

How well does the steroid treatment work? Have you had a chance to do any internet research to see if there are any holistic or other treatments that people have successfully used?

Mostly, I hope the headache is finally gone with the treatment...

Yes, 2 days on the steroid which reduces the inflammation and all the stabbing pains have gone, just a very low grade headache that doesn't need any painkillers. Go back to the doc in a week for repeat bloods to check that the steroid is dealing with the inflammation ok.

And take it from there.

Haven't checked regarding holistic treatment yet, we have 3 houseguests staying with us at present so up to my eyes!!. Doc and what I have found on the internet so far all indicate steroid treatment. Haven't seen anything else.

Seems it can burn itself out in 2 or 3 years but is like to have flare-ups.

When I get time I will be very busy researching the internet.

Polar Bear, I wish you the best!
What I say is only what I have experienced with this horrible disorder. Everyone reacts differently to different treatments. Research, Research, Research! And may God bless you with an understanding and knowlegable doctor.
