Has anyone tried Mayo Clinics?

Post by kathleenbutts »

Can't find a specialist here in Idaho. I need some answers on how to get off Mirapex/Requip and be able to manage the symptons with the onset of augmentation.

Is that because it's closest to you? Dr Silber is at Mayo. I don't know much about him and I don't think many of his patients have come here to talk about him. He has published about WED, including this paper as the lead author: http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/ar ... 4/abstract and I think he may have been on the WED Foundation's Medical Advisory Board in the past, but I'm not sure.

If you can travel, there may be other options, depending on what you need from your doctor. Dr Buchfuhrer is in Southern California and several of us travel to see him, myself included. I believe that EeFall sees someone in Washington state, which may be closer to you. There are several very good doctors at Johns Hopkins. Dr Rye is at Emory. Dr Becker in Houston. Dr Ondo is in Dallas/Fort Worth. I know more about each of these docs than of Dr Silber - it doesn't mean Dr Silber isn't a great doc, though. He's certainly knowledgeable and an expert.

Tell us more why you chose Mayo and what you need in a doctor and we may be able to tell you of an appropriate doctor.

View's got the locations of two of the doctors reversed. Dr Becker is in Dallas and Dr Ondo is in Houston. I am a patient of Dr Ondo.

I live in Boise and have not had any success in finding or getting recommendations of specialists that treat WED. I would prefer not to travel out of the Northwestern US. I just picked Mayo because that is the most well known..... I would be open to traveling to WA, OR, UT..........any thoughts. I've been on Mirapex at .75mg and it is not working. I was told to start Requip..............but I am experiencing the augmentation factor.

My opinion is, that if you are augmenting on Mirapex, the Requip will be the same. Also when my WED/PLM was bad I tried to get an appt at Mayo, and they weren't excepting patients. That was four years ago. Maybe it's different now. When I got off Mirapex I switched to Methadone. Between those I tried Lyrica, and it was awful, for me. Maybe that would work for you.

You might want to PM EeFall and ask him where he goes. He has been very happy with his doctor, I think. He did eventually go to Johns Hopkins, but only because his doc had exhausted all possibilities. The big key is whether the doc will work with you remotely. Dr Buchfuhrer in southern California will. The docs at Johns Hopkins will. Not sure about who else does and I know that some do not. Sometimes it's easier to go farther (if you can deal with the plane trip) because you only have to go once.

I was really tired when I replied last night - sorry I got the locations of the two TX docs backwards - typing while sleeping isn't a good idea :-).
