RLS t.v. commercial
Probably jumping in here where I don't belong again. I think GSK is being very clever (and that is not meant in a bad way) by presenting the problem first with it's symptoms without saying a word about the medication they are wanting you to use. By the way, the people who are asking their doctors for Requip are NOT getting that info from the ad. The ad does not mention Requip, not yet. Most pharma ads tell you to ask your doctor about Cialis or "the purple pill" and you don't have a clue what they are for. Don't get me wrong, further ads will probably come out pushing Requip. I agree with so much of what several of you have to say. But lately I have become a little more aware of what goes into making a product such as Requip (which as you said, has been used for RLS for quite awhile). It may be just a big money maker for pharma companies (although it costs HUGE amounts to get everything in place and done to get FDA approval) but for the researchers and scientists, doctors and so forth who are looking for a cure or at least help for those of us with RLS who are woking either for or with the drug companies, money doesn't really come into it. So for my part I would rather focus on the good it does all of us to get some recognition and for some help from symptoms for others. Reading back over this, I sound priggish and "I know more than you do" and that is NOT what I was aiming at. I haven't had the troubles like Jan has with the pharma companies. And as Views said, Requip is not a miracle cure, it's been around awhile and it won't work for eveyone. But at least we have been recognized as having a "real" problem which is a HUGE step for us. By the way, doesn't the chair look like it could help us get comfortable all by itself?! Hope everyone has restful legs tonight. Sleep well!
Oh, Ruby, honey...
I couldn't get a reply page to come up over where you posted about your mom. SO sorry to hear the news, I can't tell you how much. Your dad finally feeling a bit better and now this. The monkeys ARE coming after you. Do keep us posted as you can about your mom's treatment and how things are going.
On the TV commercial thing... I agree with what you said. There's good to be had from the recognition of the disease. But isn't Requip a drug that's been used for some other disease in the past? They've probably paid all the bills to get it "out there". Seems like now they're just looking to sell more of it if they can. The symptom ad is clever, as a way to create a new customer base. The more people who hear about RLS... especially if "1 in 10 adults" suffers... the more people who WILL go ask their docs. And I think that a lot of the time, the docs really ARE trying to help, even when sometimes they prescribe the "wrong" thing. You're right... there are people who really only want to help, and money's not a factor.
I'm waiting for our son with RLS to see the commercial. Want to see if he agrees that it's a great illustration of what we go through. I think he'll get a kick out of it when he sees it.
Ruby.... I always miss you when you're not around, but understand sometimes there's not much constructive to say. Take good care; I'll be praying for your mom. HUGS!

I finally saw the commercial for RLS and thought it was informative but lacked a human touch. They should of had one of us on the commercial with tired eyes, tears running down our face as we pace across the floor looking at the clock that reads 3am. Then have the spouse come out looking all sorry and sympathetic that their loved one can't get any sleep because it affects them and everyone else too. But its only the first one, hopefully there will be more, to bring this disease to the front of the class for show and tell and maybe they'll start taking it seriously. Maybe if they added up all the lost "people" hours for work alone they'd see what a serious problem this is but like a lot of us, we didn't know we had a disease until we saw an article, tv show etc that described it. So if this one commercial helps get awareness then I hope they air it day and night for the next year or two.
Peace

Hi again Ruby
It's Jan
Oh, I agree totally with you Ruby. I think I said that although I HAD had problems with Effexor, for example, I was still thrilled with the ad--frankly, I didn't even realize that it was sponsored by a drug company until it was pointed out to me. I've seen it several times since we first talked about it and, if it helps just ONE perons, then I don't care if it IS sponsored by a drug comany.
BTW, Hope everything is going better. Love to you, Ruby. We're getting ready to leave in the wee hours in the morning for Charleston and Myrtle Beach. When I get back, you'll hear from me.
Love you Ruby

No one is alone who had friends.
Within one week I had 3 coworkers call me from different states after seeing those commercials. After years of traveling and rooming together, they've definitely felt my pain. I personally feel the ads are good for people who don't think RLS is real. I just hope those overpaid drug reps get their butts into Dr.'s office and try to educate them. I don't think I'm alone in saying, I KNOW what I have, it's everyone else that's crazy!

Hi all,
I have to say that if it weren't for this ad I would still be wondering what was wrong with me. I concider myself internet savy but I never knew how to do a search for my symptoms nor did I think I could dream there would be this much help for what I have. I don't even know what that commercial is trying to sell but it made me jump up and down to know that there is a name and help for what I have. I am thinking that I am not the only one who this commercial has helped. Whether they are selling a drug or not, It gave me a name to search on the net and I found all of you! AMen!

Hi and welcome
Well hi and welcome Felicia.
I'm so glad you feel that way. Your not alone, we all were excited to find that this stuff has a name.
And your right it brought you here. I hope you find as much comfort, understanding, and information as many of us have gotten.
It's a wonderful group of people. They have certainly made a difference in my life.
Glad to have, sorry you have RLS.

The first time I saw the commercial, I bawled my eyes out and cheered; because it (hopefully) means that people are realizing that this is a serious problem. And it also lit a fire under my rump about being more determined to find things such as this forum to vent and learn.
Whoo-hooo for the commercial (which I've seen in Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado so far).

Re: RLS t.v. commercial
squirmy wrote:I saw a 30 second commercial for RLS by Glaxo-Smith Co. last night. It talks about the creepy crawly tingling feelings and how it causes sleep deprivation because movement relieves the sensations and that 1 out of 10 Americans suffer from it. They also advertise a website, but I'm not sure what the address was. I thought this was fantastic, seeing as how I had to explain RLS to yet another doctor just last week. I am in Indiana. Are any other states showing this? Has anyone else seen it? What did you think? Tina
Tina seems everyone was so wraped up in the commerical and talking about it that they forgot to answer one of your questions, the web site for the commerical was www.restlesslegs.com and yes I have seen the commerical I live in Michigan
Jan Can't wait to sleep!
Commercial on station out of Corpus Christi, Texas
I was visiting with family last weekend and was very excited to see the commercial on RLS. My family, friends and co-workers are always giving me articles they have found. Glad I have everyone's support.
Hey, all...
Just got back from a trip, and saw the GSK commercial for RLS during the local evening news in Reno, too. Looks like it's definitely going full-bore, cable and local.
BTW, speaking of drug companies putting the word out on different uses for their products. Did anyone hear a story about Mirapex being effective for fibro? I saw that "news" the same night, but was interested that there was NO information given about who did the study, who funded it, who was tested, etc. Just the blanket statement that mirapex helped fibro sufferers.
