RLS through the night

Post by Polar Bear »

We all know what it's like to be awake for hours on end when our rls won't give us peace.
A couple of nights' ago I felt moved to put pen to paper and very quickly wrote a couple of pieces.
Please excuse that punctuation is all over the place.
This is one of them, it was about 3am and it is exactly how I felt at the time.

An Invitation to Dance

The night is long
No song.
Till the dawn chorus I hear,
Is sleep near?
My nightly dance as the hours pass
hoping soon for the dance to end.
This is no dance of love or joy.
Instead it will send
the senses mad and will toy
with the emotions, the mind.
What kind
of torture is this?
Unremitting, neverending,
only sending
it's unwanted invitation to come again,
dance again.
I can dance no more.

My limbs are tired
and yet are fired
by your invitation to dance.
Each night we meet
we greet
each other.
A strange liaison, unwanted.
But I am undaunted.
Come the dawn the dance will end.
All will ease
and I with seize
the moment.
I will feel the glow
and feel it grow,
the sense of calm.

At last I lay down to sleep.
Oh sleep, where are you?

I want to say that I love it, but that seem to miss the point of how horrible this disease is.

Betty, your poem is absolutely wonderful, really captures the reality of sleeplessness due to RLS. It should be published in Nightwalkers.
