Oh, Penguin - I could vent for hours on these commecials. I know that they help "diagnose" and help people give a name to their terror. But they also do many more things that are not good. Everyone thinks this drug is the bees knees - nothing better! And, everyone with RLS must need it, right? Even if you have RLS twice a year! They make everyone in expert in diagnosing and treating RLS - the docs and the patients just need to watch it and everyone knows what to do.

All of those articles about the disease mongering are partially correct - that's what makes them so hard to fight.

Oh, well.

Penguin and Ann, I totally agree about the commercials. I do take Requip and so far is working,(I hope that it continues) but it is certainly not for everyone. The way they put it is "take this and all of your problems will be solved". I wish it would be that easy. Too bad that we cannot take control of these commercials. Oh well enough said, just giving my opinion.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh Dear Penquin, I so agree, and while it is iimportant to raise RLS education and awareness... these commercials can make me frustrated when others say have you heard about the RLS medication! ((((BIG HUG)))))) Glad to hear from you, hope to see you in other forums!

I bet we have all had that. And, as Penguin said, it's really nice for our friends, family, and coworkers to "get" it. A few acquaintances where I volunteer always say the same thing when they see me, "Oh, each time I see those ads, I think of you. How are you?"

This is wonderful!

These people I've already educated, so they don't follow it up with anything about taking the drug. But anyone else? Not-so-close relatives, friends, acquaintances, co-workers. They ALL tell me to just take this drug. One actually sent me a clipped column from a newspaper telling me the soap in my sheets would solve my problems and had I heard of it.

The good news? Most of them care. I'm grateful. So grateful that I won't complain any more about it.

The rest of them? They may not care, but are passing on knowledge that they think is helpful. They can't know that I've tried more remedies than they will ever hear about in their entire lives. It does strike me as curious, however, why they think that we don't do any research on our own. Maybe since they just heard about it, they figure it's new and we haven't had time to hear about it. Not sure. But, it's time to be grateful that someone bothered to look out for me.

I will be grateful.
I will be grateful.
I will be grateful.
I will be grateful.
I will be grateful.
I will be grateful.
I will be grateful.
I will be grateful.
I WILL!

I agree with all of you. This commercial frustrates me so much. It makes it look so easy...Have a little restlessness in your legs? Well then, just take this awesome pill and all your problems will be solved. One pill and you'll be lying there with your husband watching a three-hour movie!

I haven't seen it yet. I haven't watched too much TV lately.
I can only ditto what all of you have already said.
I will be grateful.......that was great LMAO, almost fell out of my chair.
We all have to remember that we're in baby steps still with education and awareness. But I think this group is the kind that changes those silly ideas into known facts and real faces of this disorder/torture.
Penguin, I'm so glad your home and had a good time. My heart is in that moon and you know it. Safe and sound I'm good with that.
Hugs ya'll

All of the pharmaceutical commercials that target the patients are insane and I'm sure they make the physicians insane, too.

I don't remember which product it was, but there was one commercial a few years ago that recommended that you ask your doctor if "X" could be right for you, but it gave you absolutely NO idea what the drug was for. Nothing! It was the vaguest advertisement ever. I used to wonder if they did that purposely figuring that throngs of people would go to the doctor to see if they should be on it despite the fact that they had no idea what it was even for! :x

Yeah, what is that about????? There have been several of those over the years. Is there some ban that prohibits the companies from stating what the drug is for in the first year, or something?

Do you remember the one for either Viagra or Levitra that showed a man throwing a football through a tire swing? It never said what it was for. I just had heard of it, so I knew. But, it was obviously about masculinity, virility and getting into that hole in the tire :P . So, you probably could figure it out. Then there was the one for Claritin or Allegra - a woman was running through a field of flowers. . . what the ?????

Yes--I believe the one I'm thinking of was for Allegra when it was first introduced. Just a woman running through a meadow; it really could have been one of those "not so fresh feeling" commercials from all you could tell.

Scary to think how many people went to their doctors convinced that they needed it without any idea whatsoever what it was for!

Also--the one for Cialis with the two people on the edge of cliff in separate claw foot bathtubs; perhaps it's my anal-retentive nature but all I can think about when i see that is: You'll need to scrub the tubs out first since they just sit outside all the time, how long is it going to take to haul enough buckets of warm water out there to fill them up, how much did those tubs cost to just put them out there in the elements for them to get ruined?.....It seems very romantic, but on a strictly practical side...not. :P

There is a federal law that states that if you push a drug in a commercial and actually state what the drug is used for, then you MUST list the risks and most common side-effects (which is why you get that loooong list of deadly things that comes at you 100 miles/min at the end of most drug commercials). I think what drug companies do to get around scaring people and paying for all that air time to list side-effects is they avoid the reason for med in the rirst place. They hope you'll google it!

I figured it had to be a law of some kind. . .and I figured our resident pharmacist would know 8) . Thanks for the info. It never occurred to me that the side effects were what they didn't want to list. Makes sense, though.
