Bipolar diagnosis vs rls

Post by jeffsall »

Here is another question for all you long term rls people. TY for answering about my son. :) My husband has had (self diagnosed) rls for a long time. Docs all think he is drug seeking. He feels like klonopin is his life saver but he develops a tolerence quickly and has to increase. :( But he has progressed into such terrible anxiety episodes and panic/frustration and anger that he now has a diagnosis of bipolar 1 disorder. Can the RLS cause this panic and anxiety? He is on a gazillion meds including Celexa, depakote, methadone (chronic pain), trazadone, restoril, klonopin and I cant think of any more at the moment. I am not saying he doesnt have bipolar, but I am wondering if maybe he has a wrong diagnosis.

Dear Sal,

Go to new to RLS and read the sticky posts. Does your husband match the criteria for RLS? Yes untreated RLS can lead to depression, anxiety, I know first hand, and I was mis-diagnosed for many years. RLS in itself can run deeper than just the creepy crawly feelings, some of us experience a deep seated anxious feeling which probably has developed over years of being untreated.

Also read the list of medications which make RLS worse... many antidepressants can worsen RLS. Also there are many common over the counter medications which make RLS worse.

Your husband if he decides he has RLS, which evidently he does, he should print out the Mayo Clinic Algorithm, this information is all in the sticky posts in the New to RLS section and take it with him to his doctor.

There is a great website, http://www.rlsrebel.com Jill Gunzel maintains information on living with RLS without medication... it is very helpful.

For your son, Can't remember exactly where, you might want to check the RLS foundation website and look under research, there are studies being done regarding pediatric RLS... look at research studies at the National Institute of Health website too, nih.gov for ideas on drs, studies, medical facilities to google online for more info...

Another good place to ask questions is Dr B on the rlshelp.org website. You can search the questions and answers section for more information.

Dr Buchafard is a RLS specialist.
