Temazepam etc

Post by Tiredandfedupnotloggedin »

Hi there. First post so go easy on me please.

I have had RLS since me teenage years (now 33). Wasnt all that bad until recently - the odd night here and there. Now it seems to be getting more common. Nothing has changed in my life. Recently went into hospital for another reason and came out to 3 days of restless legs and no sleep AT ALL for those 3 nights. I phoned doctor in desperation on sunday morning and he prescribed Temazepam. HE says himself he doesnt know much about RLS and I suppose the more I see him, the more we will both learn. Anyway - since it started getting bad, have cut out coffee, tea, alcohol, chocolate, icecream - anything with caffeine in it. HAs worked to certain extent but still cant sleep. I'm anxious it reappears I know that and try deep breating and thinking of everything else under the sun apart from my legs (and sometimes arms too). Anyway - what I'm asking is - has anyone found temazepam to be a fairly persistent 'cure' for RLS? It doent knock me out at all. I take 20 mg and am still awake or sleep for only 30 mins - 2.5 hours. I am slowly falling to bits. Help. :( :?:

Hey Tired,

After several years of using Lorazepam as needed for RLS it stopped working as a sleep aid. I was just prescribed Temezapam last week and tried it once. I was very drugged with 15mg, but still woke up in the middle of the night with RLS symptoms and had to do some leg exercises in a drug fog.

I'll try it again, but I'm not hopeful, and will start on a low dose of Sinemet this week. Best of luck,

Heron

Dear "Tired"

Your doc has been brave in admitting that he doesn't know much about RLS and may be open to reading more about it. If so, the Medical Bulletin on this site ( http://beta.restlesslegs.org/literature/bulletin.html )would be a great place for both of you to start.

Below are some links to some other excellent RLS sites, including medications & treatments, & the rlsrebel page gives some great tips for combating rls without drugs/or when drugs are not available:

As for the Temazepam, I was prescribed it back in January but found it did not help my situation at all.

As your symptoms are not responding to just this one drug you may find that you need to add another drug to it so they work together. You will need to work with your doctor on this one and it may be a case of trial and error until you find a combination that works for you.

Cutting out caffeine & ice cream is also a step in the right direction. Alcohol can also be a major factor in RLS. Certain fresh fruits can also be a problem (e.g. pineapple in my case).

In addition to your breathing techniques, if you can, try using different types of music in the background when you go to bed, be it relaxtion, classical, jazz, something for you to "listen to" other than your legs. Also, if you still have trouble relaxing, the herb Valerian could be worth a try. If you know a good massage therapist, book yourself in for a one hour full body session to ease some of the tension you're building up.

Hope this helps you out.

Take care
