RLS dissed again on TV

Post by pedrime »

OK, last time I posted I reported about something I saw on TV--I swear I am not a couch potato!! :)

Anyway a storyline in this week's Boston Legal featured a lawsuit against pharm. companies, claiming they invent and promote diseases like RLS for profit.

Of course I realize this is just a silly sitcom. Just letting anyone who is interested know, if anyone wants to complain to the producer or network!

I'm not easily offended, but after docs laughing me off for yrs and a decade of lost sleep, I don't appreciate any comedy where RLS is concerned, no matter the forum. We've come so far I don't even want baby steps backwards.

Have a great day & more importantly, a decent night's sleep!

You know Meg, most of the time this kind of thing just torks me off.

Today however, it simply reminds me that those that do not suffer or live with one that does, just don't understand.

This is not something we'd wish on enemies, but it sure would be nice if we could borrow the RLS boots for awhile and just use those to teach people.

That would be totally cool, just set up shop everywhere and let the nay sayers try it out for 30minutes. My bet they would not pick a 30 minute trial.

But yeah, Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr is right.

If it were a sitcom I could laugh it off, but Boston Legal is supposed to be a Legal type Drama.. People take Dramas like Law & Order and CSI and all the others very seriously to the point where they actually expect police and prosecutors to have all these whacky new fangled evidence techniques and loads of physical evidence..

That's just wrong..

Actually, Boston Legal is at least half sitcom.

its the name.....Restless Leg Syndrome! I've said it b4 and i'll say it again....the name says it all about the disease......restless leg just makes us sound like a bunch of fidgety people who want drugs. my opinion is change the friggin name! sorry but a more medical sounding name is gonna be better. but then again that is just my opinion. but then again every one takes "erectile dysfunction" sooooooooo serious, i mean God forbid some old fart can't get it up.....lets fix this problem ASAP i mean we can't let a bunch of limp...noodles go on....how painful and life altering this problem is!! In fact lets have our cure for this problem on tv 24 hrs a day 7 days a week, and lets have our own nascar so everyone will know how serious a condition this is. and that drs have came up with a cure woohoo.....and lets have some goofy looking jerk come on tv with a big cheesy grin and show us how he is cured....or better yet....lets get 2 morons in 2 bathtubs on a hillside and show how they were cured....who the hell came up with those stupid commercials.

personally, who ever came up with the "bob" commercials should have his chopped off and tossed out a car window!

Now we know where we stand in the medical community....sad very sad.....Something else has to get their attention...obviously pain isn't working...lets try a new name! i don't know about everyone else but this crap really chaps my butt. i don't know about you all but i am still waiting on my happy commercial and my nascar...at the moment i am just really pissed! it seems like we are all just banging our head on a concrete wall and i have one tremendous friggin headache! I DONT KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT I AM SICK OF BEING IN PAIN EVERY FRIGGIN DAY OF MY LIFE! TIRED OF IT YOU MEDICAL PEOPLE AND SCIENTIST AND WHOEVER ELSE IS LISTENING TO ME....TIRED PISSED OFF AS THE ENGLISH SAY...ABSOLUTELY GOBSMACKED THAT NO ONE GIVES A RATS ****....JUST MAD MAD MAD MAD MAD

I love it--good rant, tazzer. I never gave that much thought. I mean ED is taken oh-so-seriously for God's sake. And look at the silly commercials for Requip and Mirapex. Hearing possible side effects of 'excessive gambling' doesn't help our cause much.

You are so right. I wonder what Dr. B. would suggest we do.

The only hope I have of being taken seriously, at this point, is 14 years ago when I was diagnosed with clinical depression I would have been considered psycho by the general public, for taking antidepressants. Now it is pretty well accepted. Maybe the same will happen with RLS b/c there are so many sufferers out there. And slowly but surely drs. are hearing about it from their patients.

Thanks for your post!

It's a year old but still makes me aggravated.. especially that comment by the "MD" at the bottom.. But then I went and read his profile

About Me

Jeffrey Dach MD is the founder of TrueMedMD, a clinic specializing in Natural Solutions

no agenda just the truth....they classify limp willies as a medical condition...it causes no pain...it causes no loss of sleep....it doesn't cause you to miss work unless you are a gigilo...unlike what we have i don't mean to sound like a crazed feminist but this is still a male dominated world and if you look around.....how many things built resemble the male package..... thats why there are so many jokes about the male jewels....cuz they are true....they are all preoccupied with how big it is,, and omg if it doesn't work the world won't go round. i am not saying they shouldn't fix the problem, all i am saying is they give that certain problem more "CREDIBILITY" than they do our problem. all of you men should be pissed too! just think if you had both problems they would fix your jewels before they fixed the problem that is causing you loss of sleep, loss of work, loss of sanity, and the biggie PAIN! why would you care if that worked if you didn't feel like using it from lack of sleep and you are so disoriented that you can't even remember how to use it! its just not fair and its stupid! and yes i am on a efffin soapbox today...and i plan on staying here till we get some credibilty for this disease.

I don't think that's fair at all..

There are plenty of medical conditions that don't cause pain or interfere too badly with your life, unless they are unproperly managed.

E.D can be caused by both physical injury to the body, psychologically due to trauma, and by plain old aging. I don't think it is appropriate to claim our suffering is any worse or more legitimate than another condition.

We all suffer in many ways, but just because people suffer differently from us doesn't exlude any one group from getting the help they need.

I think you need to step back and realize you just did to E.D is what we have been fighting against for RLS, for all these years. Male dominated world or not.

I wouldn't worry too much about him. If you look at his site, you can see he's some lunatic conspiracy theorist, flailing at random health industry windmills. That, or he's an opportunist, making as many sensationalist articles about as many disorders as he can, in order to bring traffic to his site to drum up gullible clients for his anti-aging clinic, which is the sort of business that just screams out "snake oil" to me. I'd be surprised if he can keep his board certification for much longer, if he really has one.

I'm tempted to report him to whatever board certified him, because he's clearly making numerous misdiagnoses, and deserves to have his license yanked.

APPARENTLY YOU DID NOT FULLY READ MY POST....I SAID THEY SHOULD FIX ED BUT THEY SHOULD ALSO GIVE RLS THE SAME CREDIBILITY!

yes i know ED can be caused by injury etc. and i didnt say it shouldn't be fixed BUT NO ONE LAUGHS THEIR BUTTS OFF WHEN YOU SAY " OH I HAVE ED BUT I POPPED A VIAGRA OR CIALIS OR MY PERSONALE FAVORITE THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ED JUST THE MALE EGO EXTENZE!!!!

GIVE ME A BREAK! i apologize if the men of this board who feel as though i have emasculated them somehow......but its just not even in the the same damn class.......sure they should fix it.....they have an effin country song video for it that gets on my last nerve!

NO BODY CARES ABOUT US, EXCEPT US! AND I AM SICK OF IT! YOU ARE LUCKY IF YOU FIND A DR THAT DOESN'T LAUGH YOU OUT OF THE OFFICE. OR BETTER YET GET MEDICINE THAT WILL HELP YOU COPE. THIS ABSOLUTELY MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL! GET YOU PANTIES IN A KNOT, AT THE MOMENT I DONT CARE....

I HAVE TALKED TO SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO HAVE RLS BUT ARE AFRAID OF NOT BEING TAKEN SERIOUSLY SO THEY DON'T DO ANYTHING. I AM TIRED OF US BEING CLASSIFIED AS A DRUG SEEKERS. I AM TIRED OF TAKING PILLS THAT IN A FEW YEARS WHO THE HELL KNOWS HOW THEY ARE GOING TO AFFECT ME BECAUSE NOT ENOUGH RESEARCH IS GOING ON.....NOT TO MENTION THE STUPID NAME IT HAS!

i haven't been on here in a while. but i am back with a vengance! namby pamby and being wusses are getting us no where.

This board has become so sweet, i practically have cavities from it. i was picked off this message board for somethings for being outspoken and no holds barred messages....and i got our message out to a lot of people from these publications.

gonna end it there....i am going into cuss mode and the moderators will all have a heartattack.

No heartattack here, but thanks for not cussing. :D

Honestly, I thought in my still half alseep stupper, who is ED? LOL

I got it though, after a bit. LOL

Ok, about the name we suffer with RLS. This is what I was told by someone in great know about the medical community and it's relationship to adverts. and the medical world.

We can change the name anytime we want. Since after so many years of not taking this seriously, not being seen as a possible whole body issue, she suggested that our community did just that........change the name. It happens all the time and it does help in many cases.

Well,..............if we had changed the name this yr. would have been the best time, however it was not done, nor do I see it being done anytime soon.

It was broguht up several times many yrs ago, after this board was reopened (in its present form in 2004), and here is what we were told over and over.
"It's too late to rename it. and What would we call it if we did" However, we got no interest from the Foundation, nor our expert docs, about changing the name.

Y'all just play nice and there will be no heart attacks. :D

Love Lynne

Tazzer, could you please not use huge fonts when you post? It's kinda distracting.

Thanks.
