I'm a lifer as well and have been on 5mg of valium/diazepham for several years now and it helped some. Now I am finding that in mid night, I must get up and take another 1/2 pill to try to get back to sleep (this after exercising in the middle of the night as well.)
Has anyone else ever tried valium? I'm concerned with efficacy. May be time to revisit Dr. for some other treatment.

Valium/Diazepham Usage
Kelly,
I used lorazepam for several years, .5mg before bed maybe once a week when the RLS got really bad. Over the past few months it stopped working and like you, I'd be up several times each night doing legs exercises.
I tried temazepam last week, a little stronger but ineffective also, then started on a generic Sinemet (carbidopa/levodopa, 25/100 CR) 5 nights ago. I am thrilled to be sleeping very well for about 5 hours before it wears off, plenty of sleep in comparison with the last 6 weeks!
I was hesitant to try it, but the sleep deprivation was changing my personality for the worse, making it difficult to work and be human. For now, I'm pleased with it and experiencing no noticeable side effects with the low dose.
Best of luck,
Heron

RE: Diazepam/Valium
Last Tuesday (11 May), when I had lost complete faith in ALL my drugs and stumbled in to see my GP he took me off everything, except the Neurontin ( ) and put me on.....wait for it.....5mg Diazepam....every 4 hours!!!
It did the trick with my legs (although, I think just getting that godforsaken levodopa outta my system was the main thing!), but it did nothing in the way of putting me to sleep
When I saw my GP again on Friday he was amazed that I looked so "alive" and "with it". He had good chuckle and admitted that even HE would be "off with the fairies" if he had 20mg Diazepam in his system every day
As I have a Second Opinion appointment this Friday, I've been weaning off both the Diazepam and Neurontin (yay!!!!).
I have also used Temazepam....with no effect.
The ONLY good results I've had in the way of a sleeping tablet/sedative is with Zolpidem (Ambien). 10mg, or even 5mg once at night had me literally running for bed within 20mins
Hope this helps you out some.
Best of luck and take care of you.
