Post by sugbrendas »

I was sooo tired even more tired than without it on the same amt of sleep.
BUT I slept from 9p to 4 this am. It was a better night without it---so far we'll see.
Finally able to sleep on average 9 hours a night!

Thanks to rls.org, I have learned so much about my condition. I have received encouragement from my friends here. This is a site I can come to when I am up most of the night, and I vent, and know those who read my messages understand

I do,thanks Betty. Things are better.
Not perfect.

I dropped the Mirapex and began Tylenol PM. I realize it's not a good med for us but in desperation I tried it again and really slept good.

Of course it may be that i've been in so much pain lately, I don't know.

I think between the stockings I wear during the day, better sleep hygene i'm getting a few extra hours of sleep.

What a way to spend our lives, loooking for enough sleep. So sad really.

Brenda-----So glad things are better. Amazing that Tylenol PM is helping you, its one of the meds that usually make RLS worse. But strange things occur with RLSers. Its a hard thing to try to figure out. And you are right, we are always just hoping for a few hours of sleep. What a llife!!! Take care and let me know how you are going from time to time.

Requip was the first I tried. In a few days of taking it I was sick at my stomach and had a migraine. My doctor just stopped the med. Probably he should have tried adjusting the dose. Then after a few more doctors I was put on Mirapex. It has worked ok. After about a year I started having bouts of RLS different times through out the day. When that happens sometimes I take a tramadol which helps. Don't know if this is augmentation, rebound, or what. I go to a specialist on the 5th. If I can get vicodin it helps when I get desperate. One evening I ate ice cream which I should have known better. Ice Cream will drive my RLS crazy. So that night I walked the floor all night. And didn't sleep for 1 whole night and all the next day, slept some the next night. And I just wonder if other foods affect the RLS. I absolutely notice ice cream does and I have read other people have the same results.

If you have Dr. B's book "Restless Leg Syndrome Coping With Y our Sleepless Nights." (If you don't have it you should get it. Has everything you should know about RLS.) And it mentions ice cream making some peoples RLS worse.

Tramadol is like an opiod, works like an opiod for pain. My GP gave it to me for artheritis, and I heard either on this site or in Dr. B's book that it is given also for RLS. So I take it once in a while, not on a regular basis.

Stop the ice cream and see if it helps your RLS. Last time I ate ice cream I was in absolute misery for 1 night and all the next day. I'll never eat it again, even though it is my favorite.

Hope you get some help.

Did the RLS just start after your knee replacment? I had whole knee replacement 1 year ago. But I have had RLS for 30 or 40 years. I did fine with the knee replacement. Did your surgeon understand that you had RLS. There are meds they give you that will also set your RLS nuts. Such as anti neaseates, benedryl , anti histamines and many others. You have to really make sure your surgeon is agreeable to give you only meds. that usually don't mess up your RLS. I carry a Medical Alert Card for RLS, that explains what RLS is and what will make it worse. I ordered it from the So. Cal. RLS Educational Support Group. I think you can even download it from this site.

There are also many over the counter meds that are a no no for RLS. Such as cold/sinus/cough meds. tylenol PM, Bayer PM, so on.

Hope this helps. Did you know these precautions?

Have jsut been diagnosed and seeing my GP. Think I should get on board with a neurologist? Taking .5 Requip before bed-works until about 4 then I get up.

Ritomko: Did you get my last post.??? Did you read Dr. B's books.? Also I just got Rober Yoakum book on Amazon.com and it is very helpful. And it only cost me .26 plus $3.99 shipping and handling. It was a used book but in very good shape.

Personally i've been on all of the Parkinson's drugs,Mirapex twice.
None of them worked for me.

I did start up with the RLS again after my stomach surgery..I had a very tough time of it. I complained of horrible back pain while in the hospital and that only hurt while up and arthritis in my hip flared up, I noticed sciatica before the hip pain. I think the whole pain thing started things up.

After 18 months of suffering I was finally given something for pain and it was vicodin. It did nothing for my RLS..Actually nothing for my hip pain at all but did help the back. I finally went for a double round of steroid injections and it helped my hip/back. Pain Dr said I have arthritis all over.

I would give anything to go back to my long standing cocktail. It worked for so long and even when I augmented it was only for a short time.

I don't know if ice cream affects me, I don't eat it much and not at bedtime cause of reflux.

I do know now that my stockings are calming things down a bit.

What was your long standing cocktail?? NEVER had this until my total knee replacement 7 months ago. Immediately followed. Should I see a neurologist? What are you doing now for relief? What kind of stockings?

Just ordered the book. I always use FETCHBOOK.COM. Used books but have never received one that was not in perfect condition-often new. How long have you been suffering with this? Should I see a neurologist? This developed 7 months ago after total knee replacement. Now taking 3 Requip .25 before bed and am sleeping OK. Started with one but now need 3. Imagine I will follow the pattern of others.

Ritomoko: Glad you're are going to read that book. I'll checkout that site for books. By all means see a neurologist, and I hope you find one that knows about RLS. I see a neurologist, but he even admitted that he knew little about RLS. He said I knew more about it than he did. Because I have it and research it. He deals with all kinds of neurological diseases. But I think he is at least willing to work with me. I'll give him a chance.

RLS is just a trial and error thing. Try something if it works, great. If not you go on to something else. Then that may stop working or make your RLS worse, then you try to figure out what to do next. Woe is me. That is why this site is so valuable. Some people on here are so knowledgeable. But you still have to be careful. The soap under the sheet thing. Some people swear by it, but I can't see any possible reason why it would work. I think we have all tried it, but then again, we try anything to see if it works. Also, the compression stockings, help some people. I have been wearing them after the knee replacement and I have adema also. They feel good on my legs but if my RLs is acting up, they don't help.

Ok, I've rambled on enough. Take care all.
