The RLS/WED market

Post by badnights »

A somewhat chilling reminder that people hate Big Pharma for a reason... http://www.digitaljournal.com/pr/4215443. To these people, we're just a market. "Despite its increasing prevalence, the precise cause of RLS is not yet known. Nevertheless, with extensive investigations being conducted in the field, the RLS market is expected to gain momentum in the near future. " "The treatment of restless legs syndrome is still a relatively untapped space. The market is projected to exhibit growth at an increased rate with the development of new drugs..."

Not that it's not true, but the mindset is so different from what I' usually encounter in my narrow little world.

And in case treating the actual disease is not enough of a market, let's add in a few completely unrelated issues: "Restless legs syndrome [is] associated with other health issues such as dizziness, headaches, drowsiness, flatulence, dry mouth, and nausea. ...Apart from these, labyrinthitis and other ear disorders,...peripheral edema, and nutritional and metabolism disorders indicated by weight gain or increased appetite are also related to the syndrome." What the heck?

It's true with any group, heart disease, diabetes, etc, that is their mind set. Just to make money. I used to know a lady who she and her husband worked for " them". They made a lot of money. Both over 6 figures and that was in the late 1990's.
Then she got sick and could no longer work. She fell into one of the disease categories. They divorced. Of course I don't know the reason they divorced, but I'm sure her chronic illness hurt his life style.

It's amazing. For the last 45 years in my life I believed that alternative medicine is a money making industry based on the placebo effect. Over the last year of my life (I'm 46) I learned that a lot of questionable quacks exist, but that there is also a branch of "alternative medicine" that is the only hope for me (with my CFS): The knowledge which vitamins and minerals are essential, and which deficiencies can have which effects. All this is scientific, has been evaluated in studies, and can be found in classic medicine books. And still it is considered as "alternative medicine".

I assumed this would be familiar to most doctors, but I've met so many neurologists and specialists for internal medicine who had no idea about basics like vitamin B12 or iron. Specialists for internal medicine prescribing PPIs to almost every patient, who didn't know that this can cause vitamin deficiencies! After getting some bloodwork done in a specialized treatment center I tried to find a doctor in my hometown (big city) who can do some tests for neurotransmitters (dopamine, adrenaline, noradrenaline) and some basic vitamins. I couln't find a single one - some doctors were helpful but said they didn't know a laboratory that does this. Other doctors admitted "I don't know any of this stuff".

Sometimes I think that 99.9% of what doctors learn in college is only how to treat symptoms, not how to eliminate the causes. And in most cases they know only the most common side effects, prescribing drugs that lead to a multitude of new long-term issues. If your backyard is on fire, would you be content to build a fence around it and distribute gas masks to people passing by? Wouldn't you rather try to extinguish the fire, and find out what the cause was so that it won't happen again? Ah well...

Ah sorry, had to vent a bit here after reading this. Move this to rants if you like :)
