Huh - wonder why they decided to follow this path....

Upshot is that the NIH in the US funded three universities to study the role of manganese is RLS/WED. The study authors believe that if it works they could tailor treatment to each individual!

Re: Manganese
Gosh, this looks interesting and I hope it will be promising. It's good to read that dr Walters is included in the study. I especially like the mentioning of individualized treatment for RLS.

Re: Manganese
This makes some sense to me. The chemistries of iron and Manganese are very similar to each other. Manganese isn't as abundant as iron, is a little bit larger and heavier and the reactions can be a bit stronger. However, with that said, it would be fascinating if they learn that the problem isn't iron but really manganese and that all the past findings on iron were really that the iron was just an indicator of manganese presence or absence.

Re: Manganese
Ann, I think it says they decided to research it because they already knew that iron and manganese levels in the brain are interrelated, and that dopamine and manganese in the brain are interrelated. Knowing of these two relationships, plus the known relationships between WED and Fe, and WED and dopamine, suggested they should look for relationships between WED and Mn.
I don't know if that's what you meant, or if you wondered how they knew of the Fe-Mn and dopamine-Mn relationships, or what exactly those relationships are.

Re: Manganese
Thanks for the update. I've got some old manganeese on the shelf and I intend to finish it up now to see if it might work. Will post the results.
